The Biggest Pros and Cons

The 1987 Catalina Shoal Draft Wing Keel offers several advantages and some considerations to keep in mind:

Pros

Shallow Draft: The shoal draft design with wing keel allows access to shallower waters and anchorages that deeper keel boats cannot reach, expanding cruising options.

Stability: The wing keel provides good stability and reduces heeling, making for a comfortable sailing experience.

Maneuverability: The reduced draft improves maneuverability in tight or shallow marinas.

Proven Design: Catalina Yachts’ reputation for solid construction and ease of handling is evident in this model.

Interior Space: The 1987 model typically offers a spacious and comfortable interior for its size.

Cons

Performance Trade-off: Compared to deeper fin keels, the shoal draft wing keel may result in slightly reduced upwind performance and speed.

Grounding Risk: While shallow draft reduces risk, the wing keel tips can be vulnerable to damage if grounding occurs.

Maintenance: Wing keels can be more challenging to inspect and maintain due to their shape and underwater profile.

Resale Value: Depending on location and buyer preferences, shoal draft models may have a narrower market compared to standard keel versions.

Made For

The 1987 Catalina Shoal Draft Wing Keel is ideal for sailors seeking a versatile and reliable cruising sailboat that performs well in shallow waters. Its shoal draft design makes it perfect for navigating coastal areas, bays, and inland waterways where deeper keels might be a limitation. This boat is well-suited for both novice and experienced sailors who want a comfortable, easy-to-handle vessel for weekend getaways, coastal cruising, or extended voyages without sacrificing stability and performance.
