The Catalina Mark II 30 Sloop remains one of the most popular sailing vessels built since the mid 70s and is extremely popular with cruisers and racers alike. She's known for her wide and deep hull creating exceptional volume above and below decks and for exceptional stability under sail.

Her well appointed air-conditioned interior has a spacious feel providing 6' 4" headroom, a full galley including an Adler Barbour refrigerator/freezer, can accommodate seven in a pinch and has large storage areas under the settees, V-berth, Quarter-berth and in the three cockpit lockers.

'BLUEBONNET' is powered by a Universal 23HP diesel with 1150 hrs and her winged keel only draws 3'10". She is in exceptional condition and a great value. Recently the owners have not had as much time to enjoy her as before due to family commitments and have decided its time to take a break from sailing.

Overall, the boat is recognized for offering great value, combining classic design with practical features that appeal to both novice and experienced sailors.

The Biggest Pros and Cons

The 1989 Catalina 30 Mark II with the Shoal Draft Winged Keel offers a number of advantages and some considerations to keep in mind:

Pros

Shoal Draft Capability: The winged keel design allows for a shallower draft, typically around 3.5 feet, enabling access to shallower waters and making it ideal for coastal cruising and areas with depth restrictions.

Stability and Performance: The winged keel provides good stability and improved upwind performance compared to traditional shoal draft keels, balancing shallow draft benefits with sailing efficiency.

Spacious Interior: The Catalina 30 Mark II is known for its roomy and comfortable interior layout, making it suitable for extended cruising or liveaboard use.

Solid Construction: Built in 1989, this model features a robust fiberglass hull and deck, offering durability and ease of maintenance.

Proven Design: The Catalina 30 series has a strong reputation for being a reliable and versatile cruiser with an active owners’ community.

Cons

Reduced Upwind Performance vs. Deep Keel: While improved over traditional shoal drafts, the winged keel may still not perform as well upwind as deeper fin keels, which can be a consideration for serious racers.

Potential for Wing Damage: The winged keel’s horizontal appendages can be more susceptible to damage or fouling from underwater obstacles or grounding, requiring careful navigation.

Older Systems: Being a 1989 model, some onboard systems and equipment may be outdated and could require upgrades or maintenance.

Limited Access in Very Shallow Areas: Although the shoal draft is advantageous, it still may not be suitable for extremely shallow or tidal waters where even less draft is needed.

Made For

The 1989 Catalina 30 Mark II - Shoal Draft Winged Keel is ideal for sailing enthusiasts seeking a versatile and comfortable cruiser with excellent performance in shallow waters. It's perfect for sailors who want a reliable boat for coastal cruising, weekend getaways, or club racing, especially in areas where draft restrictions or shoal waters are common. Its design appeals to those who value a balance of spacious interior accommodations and manageable sailing characteristics.
