The IP-27 Tusker is a very heavily built tug/trawler from the Isle of Wight, England; she has the appearance of the classic North Sea Trawler. Puffin cruises economically and safely at displacement speeds and offers comfortable accommodations for the cruising couple.

"Puffin" was repowered in 1989 with a Perkins 4-108 diesel, and is fully outfitted for cruising and picnic outings.  In '09 she received new crankshaft seals and fuel injectors.  She is a charming, salty, rugged little ship and is recommended to those who seek something both unique and practical in a pocket cruising trawler.

The Biggest Pros and Cons

The 1983 Tusker IP-27 is a classic sailboat known for its sturdy construction and versatile design. Here are some of the pros and cons associated with this model:

Pros

Solid Build Quality: The Tusker IP-27 is known for its robust fiberglass hull and reliable craftsmanship, making it durable and long-lasting.

Good Sailing Performance: With its efficient sail plan and moderate displacement, it provides a balanced and stable sailing experience suitable for both cruising and club racing.

Spacious Interior for Size: Despite being a 27-foot boat, the interior layout is thoughtfully designed to maximize space, offering comfortable accommodations for small crews or families.

Easy Handling: The boat’s design allows for relatively easy single-handed or short-handed sailing, thanks to manageable sail controls and responsive helm.

Classic Aesthetic: The traditional styling appeals to sailors who appreciate classic lines and a timeless look.

Cons

Limited Modern Amenities: Being a design from the early 1980s, the IP-27 may lack some of the modern conveniences and updated interior features found in newer boats.

Maintenance Requirements: Older fiberglass boats like the Tusker IP-27 can require ongoing maintenance to address issues such as gelcoat wear, rigging updates, and potential woodwork upkeep.

Smaller Cockpit Space: The cockpit area may feel cramped compared to more contemporary designs, which might be a consideration for those who prioritize outdoor social space.

Performance in Heavy Weather: While stable, the boat’s moderate displacement means it may not perform as well as heavier offshore cruisers in very rough conditions.

Limited Storage: Storage space can be tight, which may challenge longer cruising plans without careful organization.
