Tanton Offshore 45 - Bluewater Capability with Refined Craftsmanship
The Tanton Offshore 45 represents a sophisticated blend of innovative French naval architecture and renowned Taiwanese craftsmanship. Designed by the respected naval architect Yves-Marie Tanton and constructed by the highly regarded Ta Chiao Shipyard of Kaohsiung, Taiwan, this capable offshore cruiser was purpose-built for serious bluewater passagemaking while maintaining the comfort and elegance demanded by discerning sailors.
Unlike the heavier-displacement designs for which Ta Chiao became famous, the Offshore 45 features a more performance-oriented hull form that delivers responsive handling, efficient passagemaking, and excellent balance under sail. Closely related to the acclaimed Tanton 44 and 47 designs, the Offshore 45 combines offshore capability with the sailing characteristics sought by experienced cruisers.
Built in limited numbers and often customized to their original owners' specifications, each Offshore 45 possesses a unique character while benefiting from the shipyard's reputation for exceptional quality. Robust fiberglass construction, meticulous engineering, and beautifully crafted teak joinery reflect the attention to detail that has made Taiwanese-built yachts of this era highly respected throughout the cruising community.
Designed for sailors who value both performance and durability, the Tanton Offshore 45 remains a compelling choice for extended cruising, offshore passagemaking, and comfortable life aboard. Her combination of thoughtful design, proven construction, and timeless craftsmanship continues to make her a standout among bluewater cruising yachts.

The Biggest Pros and Cons
Pros and Cons of the 1988 Tanton 45 Cat Ketch
Pros
Stable Sailing Experience: The cat ketch rig provides excellent stability and balance, making it less prone to heeling. This design is particularly beneficial for cruising in varying wind conditions.
Spacious Interior: The Tanton 45 features a roomy layout with comfortable living spaces, making it ideal for long voyages or extended stays on the water. The catamaran design ensures ample storage and accommodations.
Versatile Sailing: With two masts, the cat ketch rig offers a variety of sail configurations. This versatility allows for better performance in different wind conditions and more efficient sailing.
Shallow Draft: The shallow draft of the cat ketch allows for access to shallow bays and anchorages, broadening cruising options and enabling exploration of areas that deeper-draft boats cannot reach.
Easy Handling: The rig design and sail layout make it easier for a small crew to handle the boat, enhancing the overall sailing experience and allowing for more enjoyable passage-making.
Cons
Rig Complexity: The two-mast ketch configuration requires more rigging and maintenance than a traditional sloop. This complexity can increase the workload for owners, especially when it comes to tuning and managing the sails.
Less Speed: While the Tanton 45 offers stability and comfort, it may not be as fast as some monohulls or other multihull designs, particularly when sailing close to the wind.
Limited Performance in Heavy Winds: The cat ketch design might struggle in very high winds, necessitating cautious handling and, in some cases, reduced sail area to maintain control.
Weight Distribution: Depending on the load and design details, catamarans can sometimes experience challenges with weight distribution, affecting their performance. This requires careful packing and planning during voyages.
Maintenance Considerations: As with any older vessel, the Tanton 45 may require regular maintenance and care to keep it in top condition, including attention to the hull, rigging, and interior spaces.
