Additional Comments

Safety: Freedom's quality build process and its Lloyd's of London specification criteria far exceed most other boats in the 40' category.

The lead wing keel (5' 2" draft) allows you to enjoy the Bahamas and other challenging skinny waters and the air draft of 63' (mast height and antennas) provides ICW cruising flexibility. The carbon fiber free standing mast is a huge safety benefit. There are no chain plates to maintain or standing rigging that have to be replaced as time demands. There have never been any Freedoms that have had mast issues (with the exception of one owner who hit a bridge)..

The salon is far brighter than other sloops of similar vintage offering deck window lights flooding the living area with natural light on both sides of the center hatch. The companionway is stunning. I "forward walk" down from the cockpit like stairs without having to descend backwards. You won't find this on many boats. (Dogs love this by the way).

The walk through sugar scoop transom provides easy and safe unloading of provisions and crew from an inflatable.

Both cabin bunks (the V berth and the aft master stateroom) are large enough to accommodate all sailors and crew regardless of their height.

The "ease of use" factor is very high on the Freedom. The self tacking jib allows you to set it and forget it when underway. Just turn the wheel and tack. The jib sets itself easily.

All control lines run aft for easy management from the cockpit. There are two reef points in the mainsail providing flexibility for all conditions. The jib is on a roller furler and is controlled from the cockpit. The boat will not let you down.

There is a reason why the past president of Freedom yachts personally, has a 40/40.

The Biggest Pros and Cons

The 1998 Freedom 40/40 is a well-regarded sailing yacht known for its unique design and performance characteristics. Here are some of the key pros and cons of this model:

Pros

Innovative Rigging: The Freedom 40/40 features a distinctive unstayed mast with a free-standing carbon fiber rig, which reduces rigging complexity and maintenance while providing excellent sail handling.

Spacious Interior: The design offers a roomy and comfortable interior layout, suitable for extended cruising with ample living and storage space.

Performance: Known for good sailing performance, especially in light to moderate winds, the boat is responsive and easy to handle, making it enjoyable for both casual sailors and more experienced crews.

Ease of Handling: With fewer lines and no standing rigging, sail adjustments are simplified, allowing for easier single or short-handed sailing.

Quality Construction: Built with solid fiberglass construction, the Freedom 40/40 is durable and designed to withstand offshore conditions.

Cons

Upwind Performance: While versatile, the unstayed rig can sometimes limit upwind sailing efficiency compared to traditional sloop rigs with stays.

Availability of Replacement Parts: The unique rigging system may require specialized parts that can be harder to source or more expensive.

Weight: Being a solid fiberglass boat, it is relatively heavy, which might impact acceleration and light wind performance compared to lighter, modern composites.

Limited Dealer Support: Due to the niche design and manufacturer status, finding professional service or dealer support may be more challenging.

Price: When available on the used market, the Freedom 40/40 can command a premium due to its unique features and build quality.
