Being in the boat business, sometimes we can lose the appreciation of the magic and wonder of sailing. I personally was reminded of this by the owner of the 1988 Shannon 28 "ALEXANDRA." After an amazing amount of research, the purchase of this Shannon was the culmination of a life-long dream as a first boat. Enthusiastic videos sent to me this summer had me thinking - "That's just another beautiful 10 knot wind day on Long Island Sound." I had to think back to remember how exciting it is the first time that you can get this self-contained little home to move using just wind power. This was followed up the harrowing description of the delivery trip into one of many 35 knot Nor-east gales we have seen this Fall - how the boat did great but how it is both scary and exhilarating to be out in a North Atlantic storm, with an enormous sense of satisfaction when you tie up to the dock safe and sound. I knew the plan if everything went well was to sail off heading south but wondered if the Shannon 28 would provide enough accommodation for a family living aboard full time. So I wasn't surprised when this Shannon 28 owner said the year was great, confirming this was the right introductory boat and what he wanted to do for the foreseeable future, but he needed a little bit bigger boat. This phenomenon is known as 10 foot-itis, first recorded by Phoenician boatbuilders in Abjad script about 3000 years ago. So "ALEXANDRA is for sale, and we are confident that the next owner will enjoy her just as much. OVERVIEW
The Shannon 28 is a rare American pocket cruiser: a sub 30-foot yacht designed for serious offshore sailing while equally comfortable during an afternoon sail. Shannon Boat Company was founded by Walt Schulz in Bristol, Rhode Island in 1975 with the intent to design and build offshore yachts to the highest quality standards. Over the years, Shannons have earned an International reputation for quality construction and offshore integrity. Shannons have logged over a million bluewater miles, including an impressive list of circumnavigations and many transoceanic passages. Its offshore credentials aren't theoretical. At age 72, Monk Farnham sailed one single-handed across the Atlantic and later repeated the voyage, with the crossing recorded in the Guinness World Record Book. The design itself holds a Guinness record as a transatlantic single-hander.
Heirloom quality craftsmanship affords you a rare opportunity to own a truly outstanding yacht of enduring value. ALEXANDRA is a beautiful example of this iconic Shannon model. ALEXANDRA has primarily been used in summers in New England and stored inside a heated building for most winters and maintained in excellent condition.

ACCOMODATIONS
Single berths: 2
Double berths: 1
Cabins: 1
Heads: 1
The interior of ALEXANDRA is finished "Herreshoff style" in beautifully varnished teak and white laminates for a more spacious feeling. She has a one cabin, one head layout with the desirable forward queen berth. As the last Shannon 28 built, ALEXANDRA received many custom cabinetry features
Starting forward, there is easy access to the split anchor locker. Next are V-berths with storage under and shelving and lockers along the V-berth's length. A generous hatch with solar fan and screen and adjacent cowl/dorade vents ensure superior ventilation even on the warmest nights. A unique design for storage of the filler cushion and board results in an additional seat that is convenient at the dining table. Beneath the insert is generous storage.
The main cabin has settee berths port and starboard. The berths slide inboard, and together with alcove foot extensions they form two more adult-size berths. Beneath these extensions and behind the back cushions you will find additional storage. There are custom shelves and lockers above and outboard of the settees and water tanks under. A custom slide out chart table is located on the starboard along with auxiliary equipment controls. The chart table, which is handy to the galley, provides additional counter space. A custom teak, drop leaf table is ideal for dining below without obstructing movement in the cabin. Aft of the port berth is a hanging locker with deep shelving and countertop, followed by an enclosed head area.
The head includes a marine toilet with holding tank and waste treatment system, as well as a waste system monitor and key switch control for overboard discharge when permitted. There is also a vanity with a sink and hot and cold pressure water. The sink faucet has been modified with a new pullout shower handle for on-board showing (a shower drain pump is built into the floor). There is an opening port in the head and numerous lockers for storage.
Opposite to starboard is the well-appointed galley.
Behind the companionway ladder is the AC/DC electrical panel, engine access door, VHF radio, and storage bin for tools, etc.
Six bronze portholes with screens ensure that the cabin is always bright and well-ventilated. Interior lighting includes overhead fixtures, LED reading lights above settees and in the V-berth and under-counter galley lighting. The cabin sole is teak and holly.
Stereo/speakers add ambience to the truly lovely cabin.
HULL AND DECK
The Shannon 28 full-length keel is cut away slightly aft to improve handling and tacking. An outboard-hung rudder, positioned farther aft, also helps maneuverability. The outboard rudder was designed for ease of maintenance and simple rudder steering. The lead ballast is molded into the hull and encapsulated with fiberglass for water integrity. There is also a large bilge sump in the keel for safety. The hull-to-deck joint is an internal flange bonded with adhesive bedding compound and bolted on 8-inch centers. Structural bulkheads are first attached with fiberglass straps through the bulkhead and then further secured with continuous fiberglass tabbing along the entire joint.
