The aft-cabin, center cockpit O’Day 32 was designed strictly for comfortable cruising but the designers, C. Raymond Hunt Associates also wanted to give the boat the ability to sail to windward with ease.  Both goals were accomplished and the boat became a huge success.

Her keel/centerboard design makes her very versatile.  She’s a great gunkhole cruiser for the whole family, drawing only 3’4” with the centerboard raised.  When you want performance to windward, simply lower the board from inside the cockpit.  Her 7’1” draft makes her drive through the seas with command.

She has an enormous cockpit amidships for relaxed sailing and sunning and many an evening’s party.  Her accommodations include a private aft stateroom.  Large double berth, vanity and hanging locker.  Headroom is 6’1”.  The main cabin sleeps four more, in two separate compartments.  That’s six adult sized berths in all.  The forward compartment is completely private.  It has two v-berths, with filler, and two hanging lockers.  The forward hatch and windows keep it light and dry.  The main salon offers foam cushioned berths, with storage above and below.  The enclosed head with shower and vanity ensures privacy.  Seating for six at facing settees around a large drop leaf table makes meal time a social event.  The roomy aft galley offers alcohol stove, stainless steel sink, a hot and cold pressure water system and a large ice locker.  Headroom throughout the main cabin is a lofty 6’5”.

 Broker’s Remarks:

This O’Day 32 center cockpit boat offers great cruising comfort and sailing ability at a very reasonable price.  The boat is clean and has been kept in fresh water most of her sailing life.  Come and take a look, I promise you won’t be disappointed! Updated GPS plotter with Chip, Custom installed Cruise Air, air conditioning system.

The Biggest Pros and Cons

The 1976 O'Day 32 Center Cockpit is a classic cruiser that offers several advantages and some drawbacks to consider:

Pros

Spacious Center Cockpit Layout: Provides a protected and comfortable helm area, enhancing safety and visibility while underway.

Generous Interior Space: Well-designed cabin with ample headroom and accommodations, making it suitable for extended cruising or liveaboard use.

Solid Construction: Built with a sturdy fiberglass hull and quality craftsmanship typical of O'Day boats from the era.

Good Sailing Performance: Balanced sail plan and moderate displacement offer manageable handling for both novice and experienced sailors.

Separate Owner’s Stateroom: Offers privacy and comfort, a notable feature for a boat of this size.

Ample Storage: Numerous lockers and compartments throughout the boat for gear and supplies.

Cons

Older Design Features: Some aspects of the 1976 model may feel dated compared to modern sailboats, including interior finishes and hardware.

Maintenance Requirements: As a boat over four decades old, it may require ongoing upkeep or upgrades to systems like plumbing, electrical, and rigging.

Limited Engine Power: Typically equipped with a modest auxiliary engine, which may underperform in challenging conditions.

Weight and Draft: Moderate displacement and draft can limit access to shallow cruising grounds.

Center Cockpit Trade-offs: While offering protection, the center cockpit layout can reduce cockpit size and may affect social space compared to aft cockpit designs.

Made For

The 1976 O'Day 32 Center Cockpit is designed for sailors seeking a comfortable and spacious cruiser with excellent handling. Ideal for couples or small families, it offers a versatile layout suitable for weekend getaways or extended coastal cruising. Its center cockpit design provides added safety and visibility, making it a great choice for those who value both performance and comfort on the water.
