"DEPARTURE" is a special Nonsush 30 Ultra due to the fact that she is the last Nonsuch 30 built by Hinterhoeller in 1992 and one of only a few shoal draft models. She remained as a dealer demonstrator until November of 1996 when she was sold to her first owner. At that time the engine only had 147 hours on itl. As you can see from the extensive list of upgrades the present owner has spared no expense in maintaining her like new. If you are looking for a Nonsuch 30 you won't find anything as nice as "DEPARTURE".

The Biggest Pros and Cons

The 1992 Nonsuch Ultra is a distinctive sailboat known for its unique design and comfortable cruising capabilities. Here are some of the pros and cons to consider:

Pros

Unique Catboat Rig: The Nonsuch Ultra features a wishbone boom and a single large sail, making sail handling simple and efficient, ideal for short-handed sailing.

Spacious Interior: Thanks to its beam and hull design, the Nonsuch Ultra offers a roomy and comfortable cabin layout with excellent headroom, making extended cruising more enjoyable.

Stable and Comfortable Ride: The hull shape provides good stability and a smooth motion through the water, enhancing comfort for crew and passengers.

Low Maintenance Rigging: With fewer lines and sails to manage, maintenance and upkeep can be less demanding compared to traditional sloops.

Good Performance to Windward: Despite its unconventional rig, the Nonsuch Ultra performs well when sailing upwind.

Cons

Limited Sail Plan Flexibility: The single-sail rig limits sail area options and sail shape adjustments, which may impact performance in certain wind conditions.

Initial Learning Curve: Sailors accustomed to conventional rigs might need time to adapt to the catboat sail handling and tuning techniques.

Higher Initial Cost: When new, the Nonsuch Ultra was priced at a premium due to its specialized design and build quality.

Less Common Design: The unique rig and hull may affect resale value and could pose challenges in finding replacement parts or specialized service.

Windward Leeway: While performance is good, some sailors note slightly more leeway compared to traditional sloops when sailing close-hauled.

Made For

The 1992 Nonsuch Ultra is designed for sailors who value comfort, ease of handling, and spaciousness without sacrificing performance. Ideal for cruising couples or small families, this boat offers a roomy interior and simple rigging, making it perfect for those seeking a stress-free sailing experience both nearshore and offshore.
