2001 Kanter Bougainvillea 62

LARK is an exceptional example of the Bougainvillea 62, built in aluminum by Kanter Marine. Designed by Chuck Paine as one of his well respected Bermuda Series yachts, Lark is designed to be a capable short-handed world cruising yacht with an emphasis on safety as evidenced by her redundant autopilots, redundant fuel tanks, and redundant navigation chart plotters among other redundant features, such as switchable step down power transformers for the navigation electronics, redundant fuel filters, and a number of electricity generation options including a diesel generator, a wind generator, solar panels, and the main auxiliary engine.

Her current owner of over a decade has both sailed her extensively and continued to upgrade and improve her with items like new hull paint, new standing rigging, a sandblasted and faired bottom, new generator, electrical systems and most recently a brand new Yanmar 150hp engine currently being installed.

Lark is equipped with two integral 200 gallon water ballast tanks (400 gallons total) that are used for house water with two large Leeson 24v pumps to quickly move water for ballast underway to dampen heeling for a more comfortable ride.

Lark has many features installed with long-range voyaging in mind. One example are the two 24v, 3-gallon hot water tanks that supplement the main 17 gallon hot water tank. Using a Victron smart controller, the 3-gallon tanks can be used to "dump load" excess electricity generated by the wind and solar options once the batteries are topped off. This means coming back from a swim or snorkel to hot showers without having to wait for a diesel generator.

Lark also has an easy-to-use electric davit that enables a dinghy to be stowed safely and quickly so you never have to worry about a painter parting or having to wrestle with a dingy when need to get underway quickly. In the spirit of redundancy, the davit can also be brought up with one of the electric sail winches or the dedicated, davit integrated Warn drive.

From her builder Kanter Yachts: "Named the Offshore Cruiser of the Year in 1991, the Bougainvillea 62's exceptional performance and cruising comfort are the result of the bulbed keel's low center of gravity. This allows for a moderate draft as well as superior roll damping, low induced drag and tight pointing angles.

Designed by noted naval architect Chuck Paine, the influence of single-handed racing is evident in the design of the Bougainvillea 62. Like her racing forbearers, she features an extremely long waterline, a narrow beam-to-length ratio and narrow stern sections to reduce changes in helm when heeling. She also features a totally enclosed greenhouse-style helming position with a second u-shaped lounge area beneath the shelter as well as an optional transferable water ballast to minimize the angle of heel on long upwind and reaching legs.

The Bougainvillea 62 showcases the intrinsic advantages of alloy construction, combining the hull, deck and superstructure into one welded, high-strength watertight structure. It features three welded, watertight aluminum bulkheads for truly exceptional strength and safety, while the hull design creates integral storage tanks for water and fuel below the sole, effectively creating double-bottom construction and safety."

She has been set up to be easily sailed by a couple or even single handed with her furling boom and furling genoa and staysail with all lines led aft to winches in the cockpit protected by the hard dodger. Her two cabin, two head layout with berths for 7 accommodates a family or two couples for extended cruising. Systems have been designed and upgraded for use anywhere in the world with solar and wind generation added to allow days on anchor without the need to run an engine or generator. Lark is currently stored at Front Street Shipyard in Belfast, Maine finishing up her winter maintenance and getting a brand new engine installed and will be ready this spring for a new owner to take her anywhere. Accommodations:

The interior of LARK is thoughtfully designed for comfortable and safe offshore cruising with two separate private sleeping cabins with double berths and additional sleeping for a total of 8 people. The interior is finished off in a warm varnished cherry with white paneled overheads and a combination of teak and holly cabin sole in the staterooms and bamboo in the main salon and galley area. There is abundant natural light and ventilation from large overhead hatches (with cherry framed OceanAir retractable screens and shades), fixed hull ports, overhead dorades and some opening portlights.

The integral aluminum pilothouse serves as a transition from the cockpit to the interior below and features a nav station to starboard with excellent visibility. To port is a comfortable settee with drop leaf table that serves as an excellent watch bunk.

Continuing down the companionway steps to port is the aft cabin and head. Opposite to starboard is the large U-shaped galley to starboard. Going aft from the galley there is a passageway back to the engine room with a quarter berth above tools and storage.

Forward of the galley and aft head is a full beam main salon with U-shaped dinette to starboard and a long settee to port, with the shelves and lockers outboard.

Continuing forward the forward cabin features a centerline queen berth with settee and a forward head with shower. Forward of the cabin is a separate forepeak area accessed on deck.

Aft Cabin:

Located at the base of the companionway to port, the aft cabin has a large double berth with storage in a hanging locker and direct access to the aft head.
