Tiger Moth (name reserved) is a 1978 Morgan 382 that has been extensively refitted and upgraded in 2010 and 2011 by an experienced sailing couple to make this boat easy to operate and a pleasure to spend time on. Just about every system has been replaced making this boat the best of its kind on the market. This boat should be considered at 2011 and not a 1978 as most systems and finishes are that old and presents better than most boats that age.

Just a short list of items addressed in 2011 refit:

  • new 40HP Nanni/Kubota diesel engine
  • completely replaced electrical wiring and new panel
  • Frigoboat refer/freezer
  • Lewmar windlass
  • Awlgrip paint hull and decks
  • new main and genoa
  • below decks autopilot
  • and so much more!!!

This boat is 54' above the water and has sailed under the Cape May and ICW bridges without a problem. A perfect boat to be easily handled by one or two people. Customized throughout, the woodworking details from the teak drink holders in the cockpit, to the salon table within and so many more everywhere you look. Take a look and see what this boat will not last long!

And don't forget to take a look at the video walkthrough.

The Biggest Pros and Cons

The 1978 Morgan 382 is a classic cruiser-racer sailboat known for its solid construction and timeless design. Here are some of the key pros and cons to consider:

Pros

Sturdy Build: The Morgan 382 features a robust fiberglass hull with a traditional full keel, providing excellent stability and durability.

Spacious Interior: For a 38-foot boat, it offers a surprisingly roomy cabin layout with comfortable berths, a functional galley, and ample storage.

Good Sailing Performance: With a well-balanced sail plan and moderate displacement, the Morgan 382 handles well in a variety of wind conditions, making it suitable for both cruising and club racing.

Classic Aesthetic: The Morgan 382 boasts a timeless design with beautiful lines and teak trim that appeals to traditional sailing enthusiasts.

Solid Reputation: Morgan Yachts have a long-standing reputation for quality craftsmanship and seaworthiness.

Cons

Older Design Elements: Being a boat from 1978, some aspects of the design and equipment may feel dated compared to modern sailboats, potentially requiring updates or refits.

Weight and Speed: The full keel and heavier displacement can result in slower speeds, especially in light winds, compared to more contemporary fin keel designs.

Maintenance: Older boats often require ongoing maintenance, including attention to rigging, plumbing, and electrical systems.

Limited Maneuverability: The full keel design, while stable, can make tight maneuvering and docking more challenging than boats with fin keels and spade rudders.

Outdated Systems: Original onboard systems (engine, navigation, electrical) may need upgrading to meet current standards and reliability expectations.

Made For

The 1978 Morgan 382 is ideal for sailors who appreciate classic design combined with solid cruising capability. It’s perfect for those seeking a comfortable and reliable boat for coastal cruising, weekend getaways, or extended voyages. Its spacious interior and sturdy build make it well-suited for families, couples, or small groups looking to enjoy leisurely time on the water with a timeless, traditional sailing experience.
