When seasoned racers look at the scratch sheet and see a J/111 in their division, they take notice. These 36-foot speedsters are typically known for their large and competitive one-design fleets, but J/111 owners have found ample success at PHRF and ORC events in recent years. They have also proven to be competitive in shorthanded offshore racing scenarios, such as the Bermuda One-Two. Simply put, these boats are a terrific blend of comfort and competition, offering their owners maximum flexibility and an exhilarating sailing experience.
SPIKE is a 2015 J/111 built in Bristol, Rhode Island with a single owner. She has spent most of her life in the BVI, racing in events on the surrounding islands. SPIKE has been professionally maintained by a captain, who also runs their successful racing syndicate. She comes with B&G H5000 electronics and is equipped with a well-rounded North Sails 3Di inventory. Her decks and topsides are free of crazing, and she has never been cruised for extended periods of time. The owner added 2x new B&G 20/20 displays in the cockpit (July 2025). SPIKE is turnkey and ready to win races, or get you to the next cruising destination faster.
For those in the market for a J/111, this boat should be at the top of your list.

Performance-Oriented Design: The J/111 features a sleek hull shape and optimized sail plan that provide impressive speed and nimbleness on the water. Its design allows for quick acceleration and responsive handling, making it a favorite among racers.
Versatile Use: This sailboat seamlessly transitions between racing and cruising, offering fun and performance for both purposes. It accommodates a diverse range of sailing scenarios, from one-design racing to day sailing.
Spacious Interior: While performance is key, the J/111 does not compromise on comfort. The interior offers a well-thought-out layout, providing ample space for relaxing and socializing with friends and family. Sleeping accommodations are also adequate for weekend getaways.

User-Friendly Rigging: The design features are user-friendly, making it relatively easy to sail and manage, even for less experienced sailors. Durable deck hardware and efficient sail controls contribute to a smooth sailing experience.
Cons
Maneuverability Challenges: While the J/111 performs exceptionally well in open water and during races, its size may pose mild challenges in tight maneuvering situations, especially in crowded harbors or during coastal navigation.
Cost of Ownership: Like many performance boats, the initial purchase price, maintenance expenses, and insurance can be on the higher side. Owners should be prepared for these ongoing costs associated with owning a high-performance sailboat.
Limited Storage Space: While the interior is efficient, storage space can be limited compared to larger cruising yachts. This may require creative organization for extended trips or racing gear.
Weather Limitations: The J/111 is primarily designed for optimal performance in specific wind and sea conditions. It may not be the best choice for leisurely sailing in light winds or poor weather.
Racing Competitiveness: For serious racers, the J/111 may face stiff competition from other designs. While it holds its own, those looking for the absolute edge in competitive racing may need to consider the latest models or specific one-design competitors.
