The Biggest Pros and Cons
The 2004 Island Packet 485 is a well-regarded cruising sailboat known for its solid construction and comfortable accommodations. Here are some of the key pros and cons of this model:
Pros
Sturdy Build Quality: Island Packet yachts are renowned for their robust, full-keel design and solid fiberglass construction, providing excellent durability and seaworthiness.
Comfortable Interior: The 485 offers spacious living quarters with high-quality woodwork, a well-equipped galley, and ample storage, making it ideal for long-term cruising.
Excellent Stability: Its full keel and moderate displacement contribute to a smooth, stable ride, even in rough sea conditions.
Large Tank Capacities: Generous freshwater and fuel tanks support extended voyages without frequent resupply.
Good Sailing Performance for a Cruiser: While not designed for racing, the 485 handles well for a cruising boat of its size and design.
Cons
Heavier Displacement: The solid, heavy build means it’s not as fast or agile as lighter, performance-oriented sailboats.
Full Keel Design: While great for stability and tracking, the full keel can reduce maneuverability, especially in tight marina spaces.
Older Design Features: Being a 2004 model, some aspects of the boat’s design and onboard systems may feel dated compared to more modern yachts.
Limited Upwind Speed: The hull shape and keel type can limit upwind sailing speed and pointing ability.
Made For
The 2004 Island Packet 485 is designed for sailors and cruising enthusiasts seeking a comfortable, sturdy, and spacious bluewater cruiser. It is ideal for those who value a solidly built sailboat with ample living space, excellent sailing performance, and the ability to undertake extended offshore voyages or liveaboard adventures. Whether you're a seasoned cruiser or a couple looking for a reliable and comfortable vessel for coastal or long-distance sailing, the Island Packet 485 offers a blend of comfort, safety, and durability.
