Just listed, this popular cruiser/racer is clean and well equipped.
Cal Yachts have a terrific performance cruising reputation and are some of the most sought after sailboats in the world. They feature strong, solid fiberglass hull construction and are very competitive in ocean racing.
The 1988 & 1989, C. Raymond Hunt Design Cal 39's are not at all like the earlier Lapworth Design Cal 39's (which are fine boats in their own right). This Cal more closely resembles the current Sabre 402 in it's over-all quality construction and accoutrements, design concept, interior layout and contemporary lines. Its new owner will experience superb sailing performance, a powerful sail plan, a fast and competent hull and roomy below deck livability that will rival many a larger boat.
She was built in 1988 within the last two years of production and therefore is one of the newer Cal Yachts available. She shows well with a clean, well-kept interior. The woodwork is extensive and in great shape, nice joinery with a hand-rubbed feel to it. The hull is solid glass and has great lines. The deck is wide, easy to walk and packed with upgraded performance gear like (6) heavy duty self-tailing winches, (6) sails, (6) instrument display heads and an oversized wheel. Nothing is spared in cruising comfort either: dodger, bimini, autopilot, chartplotter, radar, life raft and davits.
She is available with the option of a slip at an upscale RI marina and promotional rates will apply to new customers. Keep in mind that there is no sales or use tax for vessels berthed in RI. She is also close to 2 international shipping terminals. Please contact the listing broker for an appointment to see her as she is not at the office location. Please see full specifications for additional information and photos.

Cons
Age-Related Wear: Being a vintage model, the 1988 CAL may show signs of wear and tear. Buyers should be prepared for potential renovations or repairs, particularly in systems like plumbing and electrical.
Limited Modern Features: While it captures classic design elements, the 1988 CAL may lack some modern amenities and high-tech equipment found in newer boats, which could be a consideration for tech-savvy sailors.
Performance Limitations: Though it offers good performance, it may not match the speed and agility of more contemporary, performance-oriented sailboats designed specifically for racing or high-speed cruising.
Maintenance Requirements: Like any boat of its age, regular maintenance is essential to ensure longevity. This might require a commitment of time and resources from the owner.
Handling in Heavy Weather: Some owners have experienced handling challenges in heavy weather due to the design characteristics of older models. This requires careful management and understanding of the vessel's limitations.
Space Constraints: While the interior is spacious for its size, it may still feel cramped for larger groups on extended cruises or for those used to more modern designs with expansive layouts. ### Conclusion The 1988 CAL is an excellent choice for sailors seeking a reliable, classic sailing experience with character.
