The MasterCraft X line is a family of inboard V-drive tow boats built for wakeboarding and wake surfing, with the X-Star serving as the flagship and the X22 and X24 filling out the premium range. A MasterCraft X boat is engineered to suit every rider in a family, running preset wake profiles for beginners through advanced riders and surf settings that shift from mellow to steep on both the regular and goofy sides. The X22 measures 22 feet 4 inches with a 102-inch beam and a dry weight of 5,500 pounds, carries up to 16 passengers, and is the smallest boat in the premium X lineup. It replaced the X23 while sitting only four inches shorter, and its deeper profile gives it more usable cockpit space than the boat it succeeded.
Power comes from Ilmore, the engine builder used in NASCAR, IndyCar and Formula 1. The X22 is standard with the Ilmore 6.2-liter direct-injected V8 producing 430 horsepower, with a 7.4-liter naturally aspirated option rated at 522 horsepower, both fitted with quiet exhaust. With ballast filled to 100 percent, the boat climbed onto plane in 13 seconds, helped by an auto-launch triple feature that deploys the center tab and surf tabs to push the nose down. Its size makes it the most agile and sportiest-handling boat in the X family.
The surf and wake setup is driven by Surf Star and the switchback ballast system, which uses a U-shaped center tank to move water side to side depending on which way you are surfing. Total ballast capacity is 3,550 pounds, and a fast-fill option fills all of it in under four minutes. The rapid surf interface lets you pick a wave by shape and amplitude with seven preloaded shapes per side, custom surf gives full control of speed, ballast and surf-device position, and up to 30 profiles can be saved. A factory steep setting produced a long, well-defined wave with push to the back at 10.8 mph, while wakeboard presets run beginner, intermediate and advanced, with a clean advanced wake at 22.7 mph and a softer beginner wake near 17 mph with no ballast.
The helm offers single or dual digital screens with low glare, GPS, rear-facing cameras, cruise control and touchscreen control of ballast, surf, tow and audio. Later models add a widescreen display, a redundant rotary control knob beside the throttle, a dedicated stereo knob and a frameless windshield. Phone holders with wireless charging keep devices powered, and the Meridian and Klipsch-based audio systems run zone control with up to four tower speakers.
Inside, the pickle-fork bow adds seating and storage, with dedicated anchor storage on center line and communicating storage down the port side. The cockpit includes convertible flip seats, a cooler location and patented transom lounge seating, with flip-up transom seats and a board storage system at the stern. Cool Feel vinyl stays up to 30 percent cooler, allowing black upholstery that holds around 18°C. Towers include the collapsible Z6, Z8 and Z10, with the Z9 standard on later X22 and X24 models, plus an optional 360-degree stern thruster. MasterCraft backs the X boats with a five-year, 500-hour comprehensive warranty and a seven-year, 1,000-hour engine warranty.
