The Cobalt R33 Surf is a 33-foot-4-inch dayboat with a 10-foot-6 beam, built as a yacht-certified surf machine that doubles as a family cruiser. It carries Cobalt's first twin-engine, twin forward drive setup with joystick maneuverability, powered by twin Volvo Penta 380-horsepower V8s. The forward drives mount their counter-rotating propellers on the front of the drive so they pull the boat through clean water and tuck under the hull out of harm's way, which adds bite for docking and trailering and helps top-end speed. Because the hull displaces enough water to throw a wave on its own, the R33 Surf carries no ballast tanks, which frees up the deep storage found throughout the boat.

The surf system combines a surf-specific hull, Surf Gate water management and Zipwake vertical trim tabs. Surf Gate creates an extension of the transom to reroute water flow and switch the wave from left to right with a button press, while Zipwake runs in full auto to balance the boat or in manual to adjust pitch and roll. The boat surfs best between 11 and 12 mph: closer to 11 makes a shorter, steeper wave, and closer to 12 makes a longer, more mellow one. Four factory presets cover steep and mellow settings on each side, and the system stores up to 20 surfer profiles with individual speed, RPM, side and trim values.

At the helm are twin 12-inch Garmin touchscreens with a dedicated surf icon that splits the navigation chart onto one screen and the surf control page onto the other. The dash includes a phone charger, switching for lights, blower and bilges, and engine readouts for the twin Volvo Pentas. A joystick handles close-quarter docking, and Volvo Penta's Dynamic Positioning System holds the boat in place at the push of a button, with autopilot for waypoint routing. The driver gets an adjustable electric folding seat, a rotating port-side helm chair, and an optional fold-down footrest. An electronic hatch opens the engine compartment, and the Volvo Penta motors include quick-drain winterization and silent shift.

The cockpit and aft deck are laid out for water sports staging. The swim platform is shaped with shaved corners to clear the surf gates, finished in teak with soft deck tracking, and an optional hydraulic system lowers the whole platform into the water on top of the standard manual flip step. The aft section holds a large sun pad that fits three or four adults, two-position adjustable backrests that face forward or out, flip-up rumble seats, an audio remote and flagpole holders. An inflatable roll-out mat deploys 20 to 30 feet behind the boat and retracts on an electric winch. A heavy-duty dive door midship eases entry and exit from a dock or another vessel.

Below the helm sits an air-conditioned day cabin long enough for a six-foot adult to stretch out, with filler cushions, deep storage and an optional smart TV. The head holds a sink, faucet, trash receptacle and a choice of pump-out porta potty or vacuum flush head, with heat and air conditioning supplied to both cabin and head and a 25-gallon fresh water tank monitored from inside. The bow seats several with stainless grab handles, eight cup holders, USB A and C power, fold-down armrests and an optional filler cushion, plus an optional windlass with all-chain anchor controlled from the helm.

Buyers configuring an R33 Surf can specify flooring in teak, seagrass or soft track in several colors, interior color and stitching, and an arch sunshade in no-shade, manual or electric form. A hardtop with tow points, Triton II board racks, shore power and a galley with grill are among the options. Saltwater use calls for the Volvo Penta Coastal series, which adds drive anodes, a protective coating, active corrosion protection and a moisture sensor in the bellows.
