Owner Comments

The steering system is a large push pull cable. I had the boat inspected by the original builder when I bought it and he said that it is the best/most heavy duty system they installed.

The head was rebuilt. New valve train. Rebuilt injection pump. New injectors. New fuel pump. New raw water pump. New coolant pump. New bowman heat exchanger. New oil cooler. New exhaust elbow. Oil pressure is good and no exhaust leaks.

The fuel tanks are baffled. They have an access port. But it’s only 1.5”. For cleaning with a filter/hose/pump system. You can also clean your own fuel with an in line transfer pump.

There’s no anemometer. But there’s a wind indicator on top of the mast.

Single Head

It has a dripless shaft seal

Lofrans tigres windlass. 200’ 5/16 chain

Batteries are in the engine room in a fiberglass box.

Versatile Sail Plan: The ketch rigging allows for a versatile sail plan that enables easy handling in various wind conditions. Sailors appreciate the balance it provides, making it easier to manage for smaller crews or single-handed sailing.

Spacious Interior: With a well-thought-out layout, the interior provides a comfortable living space that includes ample storage, a functional galley, and cozy sleeping quarters. The generous headroom is a notable advantage for taller sailors.

Stable Performance: The design of the Westsail caters to stability, especially in rough seas. Its long keel and full hull design contribute to a smoother ride, providing confidence for offshore adventures.

Timeless Aesthetics: The classic lines and traditional aesthetic of the ketch ensure that it remains a head-turner in any marina. Its vintage charm appeals to many sailing enthusiasts.

Cons

Weight and Speed: While the heavy build adds to stability, it can also result in slower speeds compared to lighter modern sailboats. Those seeking speed may find the Westsail less appealing for racing or fast day sailing.

Maintenance Needs: The traditional construction and design may require more hands-on maintenance, particularly with wood finishes and fittings. Owners should be prepared for regular upkeep to preserve its beauty and integrity.

Limited Maneuverability: The ketch rig, while versatile, can be less maneuverable in tight spaces compared to sloop rigs. This may pose challenges when docking or navigating crowded harbors.
