Some yachts inspire adventure. SOZO has a story to tell.
From Alaska down the West Coast, through the Panama Canal, around Florida and south to Grenada, this 1998 Ocean Alexander 500 Sports Sedan has carried her owners on the journeys many boaters dream of making. Today, she resides under a covered slip on the Tennessee River, offering an intriguing opportunity for buyers with adventures of their own in mind.
Her cruising story is complemented by meaningful equipment investments: engines rebuilt/replaced in 2015, a generator replaced within the past five years, 1,850 watts of solar panels and a watermaker. For buyers who envision quiet anchorages and longer stays away from the dock, these are details worth exploring.
An enclosed flybridge, shaded aft cockpit and euro transom create inviting spaces to enjoy the journey-from watching the shoreline unfold to settling in for an evening on the water.
Whether your plans include the great loop, island cruising, inland exploration or a more adventurous chapter aboard, SOZO deserves a closer look. Explore the photos and full specifications, and imagine where you would take her next.
Boarding from the broad swim platform, curved steps on either side lead into the covered cockpit. A propane grill and separate burner make outdoor meal preparation convenient, while the shaded setting offers a comfortable place to enjoy the water. Side decks provide access to the bow, a large hatch opens to the lazarette and engine room, and a ladder leads to the flybridge.
Wide double sliding doors connect the cockpit to the salon, creating a natural flow for relaxing and entertaining. Inside, rich teak woodwork, parquet flooring and expansive windows give the room its welcoming character. A sofa, reclining seating and freestanding table provide space to settle in, share a meal or enjoy the scenery. Opening side windows bring in fresh air, while heat and air conditioning extend comfort across the seasons.
Two steps forward, the raised galley to port stays open to the salon, keeping the cook connected with everyone aboard. Corian countertops, a double stainless-steel sink and surrounding cabinetry provide practical workspace and storage. A Vitrifrigo refrigerator/freezer, four-burner induction cooktop and Sharp microwave/convection oven support everyday cooking and longer stays aboard.
To starboard, the lower helm offers a sheltered interior operating station with a traditional wood wheel, engine instrumentation, bow thruster controls and Naiad stabilizer controls. Large forward windows provide an outlook over the bow, with vessel monitoring and electrical controls nearby.
Steps descend to the accommodation level, where three staterooms and two heads offer privacy for owners and guests. The port guest cabin features a queen berth, hanging locker, bedside drawers and opening ports. Opposite, the starboard guest cabin provides twin berths, storage and a combination washer/dryer. Forward to port, the guest head includes a vanity with solid surface countertop and a separate enclosed shower.
The owner’s stateroom occupies the bow, with a queen island berth accessible from both sides. Two hanging lockers, under-berth drawers and additional cabinetry offer storage for extended cruising, while four opening ports provide natural light and ventilation. The private ensuite head to starboard includes a vanity and separate enclosed shower.
The flybridge adds an especially appealing second living area. Beneath the canvas top and surrounding clear-panel enclosure, this bright space brings captain and guests together with broad views of the water. A double helm bench and separate companion chair face forward, while a blue upholstered bench across the aft section and a freestanding round table create an inviting setting for coffee, lunch or an evening gathering. The open floor area allows room to move between the helm and seating, and zippered enclosure panels offer flexibility as conditions change.
At the upper helm, a stainless-steel wheel, Garmin touchscreen chartplotter and neatly arranged instruments place navigation and engine information in front of the captain. Garmin radar and autopilot, bow thruster controls and VHF radio complement this elevated operating station. Cabinetry beside the helm provides additional storage, while stainless-steel rails border the ladder opening to the cockpit below.
Supporting life away from the dock are 1,850 watts of solar, a Northern Lights 9 kW generator, an inverter/charger and a Schenker watermaker. Together with her comfortable accommodations and choice of indoor and outdoor gathering spaces, these features give buyers plenty to explore.
SOZO’s engine room offers a practical layout for an owner who takes an active role in the boat’s operation. Twin Volvo Penta TAMD73P-A diesels, rated at 430 horsepower each, flank a central service aisle with removable diamond-plate floor panels. Overhead lighting illuminates the machinery, while insulated overhead surfaces and protective rails along the engines contribute to a functional working space.
Service equipment includes Racor fuel filtration, raw-water strainers and a Fireboy fire-suppression system. Hoses, wiring and plumbing run along the surrounding bulkheads, with access to inspection and service points from the center aisle and adjoining machinery spaces.
A Northern Lights 9 kW generator in a sound enclosure supports onboard electrical needs. Nearby, bulkhead-mounted charging and solar-control equipment forms part of SOZO’s electrical installation, which includes 1,850 watts of solar panels, battery banks and an inverter/charger. A Schenker watermaker further supports extended stays away from marina services.
The adjoining utility and lazarette area provides shelving and storage for tools, spare parts and cruising supplies, helping keep essential equipment organized and close at hand. Together, these spaces reveal the practical side of a yacht that has spent considerable time traveling and living beyond the dock.
