In the late 70's, Gordon Fisher commissioned Mark Ellis to design a boat that was very roomy, stable, easy to sail fast and level. Over 950 examples were built by George Hinterhoeller for many happy owners. Very few boats can match the spaciousness in such a short length.

The great sailing qualities come from a single free standing mast, without stays, a powerful single main sail controlled by an ingenious wishbone boom. Control of the sail is simple and fast and allows easy reefing and sail shaping to optimize sailing in all points. The heavy keel and wide beam makes sailing flat and a joy that few monohulls can compare.

This example is an Ultra 30 version and has a recent engine change, and the owners have kept in in optimal condition. This boat has only been in Florida for a short time and looks like a much newer boat.

The Biggest Pros and Cons

The 1987 Nonsuch Ultra is a distinctive sailboat known for its unique design and comfortable cruising capabilities. Here are some of the pros and cons associated with this model:

Pros

Unique Cat Rig Design: The Nonsuch Ultra features a cat rig with a single, unstayed mast and a large mainsail, simplifying sail handling and reducing the need for extensive rigging.

Spacious Interior: Thanks to its wide beam and efficient layout, the Ultra offers generous living space below deck, making it comfortable for extended cruising.

Stable and Comfortable Ride: The hull design provides excellent stability, which enhances comfort in various sea conditions.

Low Maintenance Rigging: The absence of shrouds and stays reduces maintenance requirements and potential points of failure.

Easy to Sail Short-Handed: The sail plan and deck layout make it manageable for solo sailors or small crews.

Cons

Limited Sail Plan Flexibility: The cat rig limits sail options compared to sloop or cutter rigs, potentially affecting performance in certain wind conditions.

Performance in Light Air: The large mainsail may struggle in very light winds, resulting in slower speeds.

Mast Stepping Challenges: The unstayed mast can be heavier and more complex to step and unstep for transport or maintenance.

Less Traditional Aesthetic: The unique design may not appeal to sailors seeking a classic sailboat look.

Potential for Higher Initial Cost: When new, Nonsuch models often commanded premium pricing due to their innovative design.

Made For

Its innovative cat rig and unstayed mast make it perfect for those who prefer simplified sailing without sacrificing stability and speed.
