Mainship Pilot: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Mainship 45 Pilot is a thoughtfully designed trawler that reflects the company's dedication to quality construction and value retention. As an employee-owned company, Mainship leverages its extensive experience in cruising vessels to offer a package that balances affordability with functionality. The 45 Pilot is built using modern technologies such as CAD-CAM design and 5-axis routers, which streamline production and reduce costs without compromising on quality.

Exterior Design and Cockpit

The 45 Pilot features a broad swim platform and a wide transom door, facilitating safe and easy boarding. The cockpit is notably equipped with a galley area that includes a grill, sink, and ice maker, making it convenient for preparing meals and beverages onboard. The layout ensures smooth movement from the stern to the helm with only two steps and a C-door providing access to the helm station. The bow offers secure handholds and accessible windlass foot controls, complemented by remote controls at the helm for ease of operation.

Engineering and Storage

The engineering spaces on the 45 Pilot are spacious and well-organized, allowing for easy access to critical components. Twin Yanmar 440 horsepower 6LY3 STP engines are installed port and starboard, with batteries located forward. Despite the absence of stand-up room in the engine compartment, there is ample space to perform routine maintenance and store tools and large items. Storage solutions extend to the cockpit seating, where two large bins and a shallow bin provide room for fenders, canvas, and tools.

Interior Living Spaces

Inside, the salon serves as a comfortable retreat featuring bar stools, a movable chair, and an L-shaped lounger with an adjustable-height table. Natural light fills the space through a sunroof equipped with an accordion shade and an electric lift mechanism. The helm station is highlighted by rich wood accents and a standard wood shift spiel, offering excellent visibility fore and aft. Storage beneath the double-wide helm seat includes a bottle rack. The galley is efficiently arranged with a double sink, double-drawer refrigerator and freezer, an oven-microwave combination, and a coffee maker. Purposeful storage includes a pantry beneath the helm station, and power panels are strategically located for accessibility.

Private Accommodations

The lower cabin area provides generous overhead clearance, measuring approximately 74 inches in some areas, including the heads. The guest cabin is furnished with a double bed, allowing guests to relax comfortably. The master stateroom features a queen island bed with a small step for ease of access, a private TV, and continued wood accents. A dressing bench and a well-organized closet are situated on the starboard side. Notably, the 45 Pilot includes a bathtub, a rare amenity in vessels of this size, offering an added level of comfort for extended cruising.

Power and Performance

The 45 Pilot measures 47 feet 9 inches in length overall, with a beam of 15 feet 6 inches, a draft of 3 feet 8 inches, and a bridge clearance of 18 feet 8 inches. It displaces 40,000 pounds and carries 777 gallons of fuel. The model is available with twin Yanmar or Cummins engines; the test boat was equipped with twin Yanmar 440 horsepower 6LY3 STPs. During testing with three people aboard and full fuel tanks in Biscayne Bay, Miami, the vessel demonstrated smooth handling and quiet operation, with a maximum interior noise level of 83 decibels at top speed. It handled choppy conditions well, maintaining a comfortable ride. The top speed reached was 29.3 miles per hour at 3380 RPM, while the most efficient cruising speed was around 2750 RPM, providing a range of approximately 632 miles on a full tank.

Conclusion

The Mainship 45 Pilot offers a compelling combination of value, comfort, and performance for cruising enthusiasts. Its modern construction techniques, spacious and functional interior, and reliable powertrain make it well-suited for extended voyages. With thoughtful design features such as ample storage, a well-equipped cockpit galley, and private accommodations including a bathtub, the 45 Pilot delivers considerable boat for the investment, supporting the dream of long-range cruising.
