Mainship Expedition: BoatTEST Review
Overview
The Mainship 40 Expedition represents an evolution of the popular Mainship 40 trawler, incorporating design enhancements aimed at increasing comfort and livability for extended cruising. This model maintains the trawler's functional strengths while introducing thoughtful interior and exterior modifications to better accommodate socializing and relaxation aboard.
Interior Living Spaces
Significant changes to the interior begin in the salon, where a single-level layout now features the galley relocated to the forward port side. This repositioning opens up the starboard side to a spacious satee that can seat more guests and convert into an additional berth for overnight accommodations. The salon includes two movable loungers and a 26-inch flat screen TV, enhancing comfort and entertainment options. The lounger couch easily converts into a double bed, providing flexible sleeping arrangements. The lower helm station has been upgraded with a double-wide helm seat featuring a flip-up backrest, allowing those seated at the satee to maintain visibility of the helm area. Rich wood finishes continue to define the interior ambiance.
Private Accommodations
Below deck, the Mainship 40 Expedition offers comfortable accommodations suitable for extended cruising couples. The cabin height measures approximately 73 inches, with a doorway height of 69.5 inches by 16.5 inches. The layout includes twin accommodations to port and a shared head to starboard. The master stateroom is appointed with an innerspring mattress, cherry wood lockers, and a cedar-lined hanging locker. The guest cabin can serve multiple purposes, including additional hanging storage, an office, or a sewing room. The single head features a separated shower area that is lower than the sole, providing increased overhead space. Storage is cleverly integrated throughout the boat, including beneath the satee, under the island bed, and within the power panel corner, which also houses the sound system, subwoofer, and ice maker.
Exterior Design and Deck Areas
The exterior design emphasizes safety and functionality with a nearly single-level deck leading forward, oversized railings, and wide walkways that facilitate easy handling of lines and anchoring. The foredeck provides ample space for both operational tasks and leisure viewing. The cockpit is spacious enough to accommodate deck chairs and features extended overhead coverage, a large dunnage box, and true stairs with a handrail leading to the upper control station. The standard swim platform offers a sturdy boarding step and a convenient area for launching water toys or towing a tender. The upper helm station is notably large for its class, providing ample space for social gatherings as well as operational activities. It includes a small table, seating, and a summer galley equipped with an electric grill, stainless steel sink, and an ice maker.
Power and Performance
The Mainship 40 Expedition can be powered by either a single or twin Yanmar engine configuration. The test model featured a single electronically controlled 380 horsepower Yanmar engine. Access to the engine compartment is facilitated by a large center floor panel and additional removable panels for comprehensive serviceability. The vessel measures 41 feet 4 inches in length with a beam of 14 feet 2 inches and displaces 24,000 pounds. Fuel capacity is 300 gallons, supporting a range of approximately 290 miles. During sea trials in Biscayne Bay, Florida, the boat demonstrated smooth handling and reliable engine performance with good visibility from the helm. It achieved a top speed of 19.2 miles per hour at 3,368 RPM and a best cruise speed of 18.3 miles per hour at 3,250 RPM. Standard equipment closely mirrors that of the 40 trawler, with recommendations to include optional upgrades such as a 9KW generator with sound shield and internal C-strainers.
Conclusion
The Mainship 40 Expedition successfully builds upon the proven trawler platform by enhancing interior livability and maintaining the functional attributes necessary for extended cruising. Its thoughtful design changes, comfortable accommodations, and reliable performance make it a compelling option for those seeking a capable and comfortable cruising yacht. The vessel’s spacious upper helm and deck areas further contribute to its appeal for both operation and leisure.
