Boattest.com Review

Overview

The Krogan 48 North Sea is a robust cruising vessel designed for extended offshore passages as well as comfortable coastal cruising. Its key attributes include exceptional fuel economy, impressive range, positive stability, and excellent sea-keeping and sea-kindliness qualities. These features make it well suited for long voyages spanning hundreds or even thousands of miles without frequent refueling stops, while also providing a comfortable and spacious environment both above and below deck.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The 48 North Sea features a full displacement hull with a ballasted keel, contributing to its seaworthiness and notably gentle motion in rough conditions. The foredeck is expansive and includes a long bench seat, offering a pleasant vantage point for enjoying sunsets or relaxing outdoors. A stout windlass equipped with two gypsies facilitates efficient anchor handling. The boat deck is designed to accommodate a large tender and is accessible either from the pilot house or through a sizable scuttle leading to the aft deck. Wide covered decks run along both sides of the vessel, enhancing ease of movement and protection from the elements. The large covered aft deck opens directly into the salon via double doors, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor flow. Additionally, the upper helm station and tabernacle mast enhance the boat’s versatility as an effective coastal cruiser.

Pilot House and Interior Living Spaces

The pilot house is thoughtfully designed to provide comfort and functionality for both captain and crew. It includes long bench seats suitable for guests or resting, and the helm is equipped with comprehensive engine instrumentation and ample space for navigation electronics. A full-size chart table with large drawers, high fiddle rails with handholds, and conveniently located storage compartments support efficient navigation and onboard operations. Navigation lights and equipment controls are neatly housed behind a teak ship's wheel. Adjacent to the pilot house, the galley is open to the main salon and adequately sized for preparing meals whether offshore or in port. The salon itself features an L-shaped settee to starboard and an additional settee to port, with a bright interior accented by white overheads, teak deck beams, and teak handrails that evoke a classic seafaring ambiance.

Private Accommodations

The master suite is designed to feel more like a traditional bedroom than a typical boat stateroom, featuring a full queen-size bed with a platform that lifts pneumatically for easy access to storage below. This space can also be converted from an office and den into a comfortable sleeping area for two, complete with lighted bookshelves and opening port lights that create an inviting atmosphere. Both the master and guest heads are equipped with separate stall showers, enhancing comfort and convenience during extended voyages.

Power and Performance

The Krogan 48 North Sea is powered by a single engine, a choice that supports fuel economy and reduces maintenance complexity. Maneuvering in tight quarters is aided by a standard bow thruster. The vessel measures 48 feet 6 inches on deck, with a beam of 16 feet 8 inches and a draft of 5 feet. It carries 1,000 gallons of fuel and 4,500 pounds of lead ballast, displacing approximately 56,500 pounds at half load. During sea trials conducted in challenging, unpredictable swell conditions, the boat demonstrated a very pleasant motion at a cruising speed near 10 miles per hour. At 2,000 RPM, it achieved 9.7 miles per hour while consuming 4.3 gallons of fuel per hour, resulting in an estimated range of 2,054 miles.

Conclusion

The Krogan 48 North Sea combines the attributes necessary for serious offshore passage-making with the comfort and livability desired for coastal cruising. Its seaworthy and sea-kindly hull, spacious and well-appointed interior, and efficient powertrain make it a capable vessel for a variety of nautical pursuits, whether exploring exotic ports, enjoying favorite coastal destinations, or simply relaxing aboard with a good book.
