Kairos: 2016 Kadey-Krogen 48 AE Trawler for Sale in Annapolis, Maryland
The 2016 Kadey-Krogen 48 AE is a full displacement trawler built around the way owners live and cruise aboard. AE stands for Advanced Ergonomics: the 48 replaced the 48 North Sea in 2011 with wide house-style steps, solid handholds, and a pilothouse where two people can stand watch side by side. Located in Annapolis, Maryland, Kairos has a ballast keel, a skeg-hung rudder, and a solid fiberglass hull below the waterline laid up with vinylester resin and Kevlar in critical areas.
Kairos is in truly excellent condition and meticulously maintained. A recent survey is available and she comes with a recent round of owner-completed work: a full engine cooling system service with new heat exchangers and hoses, a rebuilt starter with a new Lifeline 8D start battery, and a cleaned, re-hosed, and repainted Northern Lights generator. Three coats of Sea Hawk antifouling went on in September 2026, and the teak cap rails were refinished in October 2026. For handling, she has hydraulic bow and stern thrusters, four CCTV cameras, and ABT-Trac stabilizers.

Propulsion & Handling
Power is a single John Deere PowerTech 4045AFM85, a 4.5 L four-cylinder rated at 200 hp at 2,500 RPM per the data tag, with approximately 2,450 hours. It drives a 2" Aquamet 22 shaft through a ZF-280-1 gear (3.00:1), with a Tides Marine dripless shaft seal. The skeg and keel partially protect the propeller, a new propeller is being installed currently. Underwater running gear is recently painted with Ultralux Trilux 33 antifouling.
Recent engine work includes a raw water and closed cooling flush of the block, new heat exchangers, and replacement of all cooling hoses and other worn hoses. The starter was rebuilt, a new Lifeline 8D start battery was installed, and the CCV filter was replaced. A new belt tensioner went in, the serpentine was checked, corrosion and flaking paint were removed with the engine primed and repainted.
Steering is SeaStar hydraulic power steering with stations in the pilothouse and on the flybridge. An ABT-Trac central hydraulic system runs the bow and stern thrusters, windlass, and steering. ABT-Trac Digital 220 electro-hydraulic stabilizers take power from both the generator and the engine.
Fuel is carried in three aluminum tanks (a 460 gallon center tank and two 250 gallon wing tanks) totaling 960 gallons. The system includes two Racor 75/900-MAX primary filters on the main engine, an ESI Clean Fuel System polisher, and a 12V fuel transfer pump. A Reverso 12V system handles oil changes.
Electronics and Navigation
The pilothouse has two 16" Furuno TZ Touch displays with GPS chartplotter, radar, heading, and network sounder, and a 12" Furuno TZ Touch sits at the flybridge helm. A Furuno Navpilot autopilot has control heads at both helms. The open array radar antenna is mounted on the aft radar arch, and an Airmar WS-220WX wind sensor feeds the Furuno display.
Communications include ICOM M506 VHF radios at both helms, a flybridge hailer speaker, and AIS target data on the displays. An Actisense W2K-2 NMEA 2000 WiFi gateway was added in August 2026, and a new horn was installed the same month. Four CCTV cameras feed a dedicated Pelco monitor at the pilothouse helm, and two Ritchie 4" magnetic compasses are fitted.
Electric and Comfort Systems
The boat runs 12V DC systems and 120/240V AC at 60 Hz, single phase, with two 50 amp shore power inlets (foredeck and aft cockpit starboard). A Northern Lights M843NW3 12 kW diesel generator with a hydraulic power takeoff sits on the centerline in the aft engine room, at approximately 3,070 hours. Recent generator work covered a tightened electrical control box, new hoses throughout, a full cleaning and inspection, and priming and paint where needed.
The house bank is four Lifeline 8D AGM batteries totaling 1000 Ah, charged through a Magnum Magna-Sine MS2812 inverter/charger. A Charles Industries Solid Power 5000 24V/40A charger and a 265A Balmar alternator on the main engine are also fitted.
Four Cruisair reverse-cycle units (two 24,000 BTU, one 12,000 BTU, one 8,000 BTU) provide about 68,000 BTU of cooling and heating. Hot water comes from a 20-gallon Raritan 120V heater with an engine heat exchanger, and fresh water is filtered through a Seagull IV system.
Galley, Salon, and Accommodations
The salon has a U-shaped settee to starboard, two Stressless armchairs to port, and a folding high-low table. Satin-finished teak joinery, a teak and holly sole with carpet runners, Cambria counters, and Hunter Douglas Silhouette shades with drapes complete the space. A new 48" LG Smart TV was installed in the salon, and a Fusion marine stereo and KVH Tracvision M5 satellite TV antenna are fitted.
The galley, to starboard and forward of the salon, has a Bluestar four-burner propane range and oven and a full sized GE Profile stainless refrigerator/freezer with filtered water ice maker. It also has a stainless wine chiller, a GE Profile microwave with integrated exhaust, and a filtered drinking water tap at the stainless under-mount sink.
The owner's stateroom is forward with its own ensuite head. A second cabin to starboard is set up as an office, with an L-settee that converts to a queen berth and a fold-down bunk above. Both heads have Dometic 12V toilets and stall showers with sumps, and Bosch stackable washer/dryer units are aboard.
In the pilothouse, twin Stidd helm chairs face the helm and a settee with a hi/lo table converts to a sea berth.
Deck and Cockpit
The cockpit and starboard side walkway have a teak deck overlay, and the teak cap rails were refinished with three additional coats of varnish in October 2026. Port, starboard, and center transom doors open onto a fixed swim platform with removable stainless stanchions and a telescoping stainless boarding ladder. A hot and cold cockpit shower is on the starboard side.
The flybridge has a molded L-shaped bench to port, a dual Pompanette helm seat, a Sunbrella-type bimini on a stainless frame with the aft radar arch, a hardtop, and a portable stainless gas grill. A custom full flybridge enclosure is included. A Steelhead Marine ES1000 davit (1,000 lb) launches the 12' AB RIB tender (2015), which is powered by a Yamaha 40 hp four-stroke outboard.
Exterior lighting covers the aft deck overhang, flybridge arch, deck courtesy, and cockpit. Two coats of Sea Hawk Colorkote Triple Biocide antifouling were applied in September, with an extra coat along the waterline, and a Hull Shield ultrasonic antifouling system with 10 transmitters.
Safety and Anchoring
Four Rule 2000 bilge pumps with float switches sit in the lazarette, aft engine room, amidships, and forward bilge, and an Ultra Safety high-water alarm is installed. Fixed fire suppression is a Sea Fire HFC-227 system in the engine compartment, backed by portable dry chemical extinguishers. Aboard are Type I and Type II PFDs, ring and sling throwables, handheld flares, a Revere Elite 4-person liferaft (currently needing recertification June 2025), an ACR Global Fix Pro EPIRB, and a first aid kit.
Ground tackle is a Maxwell 2500 dual hydraulic windlass with a chain counter, operated from foot pedals on the foredeck or switches at the helm. It handles a 40 kg Rocna anchor on approximately 300 feet of galvanized chain, with a galvanized plow anchor as backup. Four long fenders and four ball fenders are aboard.

The expansive dash layout ensures that all controls are easily accessible and well-organized. The yacht is powered by a single engine, which contributes to economical operation. Maneuvering is simplified with the inclusion of both bow and stern thrusters, making docking straightforward. The vessel also features a substantial bow pulpit equipped for dual anchors, one of which is managed by an electric windlass. A notable feature is the large Freeman hatch that offers secure, watertight access to the anchor rode, a detail typically found only on serious offshore boats. The spacious flybridge deck accommodates a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) and includes a comfortable command station that maintains excellent visibility for navigation.
Interior Living Spaces
The main deck salon is designed for comfort and functionality, featuring a pop-up television and a special edition quartz countertop that adds a refined touch. Storage is optimized with numerous drawers, catering to practical needs during extended cruising. This particular model features a two-cabin layout, with a generously sized day head that includes a dedicated walk-in shower. Behind a cabinet in the day head, there is a washer and dryer combo, adding to the vessel’s self-sufficiency and convenience.
