Summary
2004 Island Packet 420
Hull, Deck and Cockpit

ISLAND PACKET YACHTS (and the IP 420, of course) were produced to the standards to qualify for the European "CE" Rating: Category "A" - Ocean". This is the highest level achievable and facilitates getting insurance for possible "offshore" voyaging as well.

Hull:

The ISLAND PACKET 420 was produced with the Company's proprietary "FULL FOIL KEEL" that provides enhanced directional stability, reduced draft, a reduced angle of heel and protection for the yacht's underbody, the rudder and the drive train. The "cutaway" underbody's spade rudder provides good control for the yacht and the reduced whetted surface does reduce parasitic drag as well. The LIVIN 2's bottom was stripped and epoxy barrier-coated in 2015.

  • LIGHT IVORY Gel coat finish
  • Hand laid-up fiberglass hull with proprietary pressure-fed resin infusion and tri-axle laminates with integral interior grid support structure

  • "Scoop" Transom
  • A "Full-Run" keel aka the proprietary ISLAND PACKET "Full Foil keel" with encapsulated interior lead ballast

The Biggest Pros and Cons

The 2004 Island Packet 420 is a well-regarded cruising sailboat known for its sturdiness and comfortable design. Here are some pros and cons to consider:

Pros

Sturdy Construction: The Island Packet 420 is built with a solid fiberglass hull, providing excellent durability and seaworthiness, making her suitable for offshore cruising.

Spacious Interior: The layout offers ample living space, featuring a large salon, a fully equipped galley, and multiple sleeping quarters. This makes it ideal for long voyages or living aboard.

High Quality Finish: The interior boasts fine craftsmanship with quality materials, including rich wood paneling and comfortable furnishings, enhancing the onboard experience.

Excellent Stability: The design includes a full keel that offers great stability and tracking capability in various sailing conditions, making it easier for cruising sailors to handle.

Great Storage: The boat features numerous storage compartments, allowing for the stowage of gear, provisions, and personal belongings, which is essential for long-term cruising.

Good Performance: While not the fastest sailboat, the Island Packet 420 is known for its balanced performance and ability to handle different wind conditions effectively.

Cons

Weight: Being a heavier boat, the Island Packet 420 can be slower than lighter performance-oriented sailboats, which may affect speed in races or when sailing against stronger currents.

Draft: The full keel and the accompanying deeper draft may limit access to shallower bays or anchorages, which could be a consideration for some cruising areas.

Cost: As a well-built cruising yacht, the supply and demand can make them on the pricier side in the used boat market, especially in good condition.

Complex Systems: The abundance of systems and features can add complexity, requiring regular maintenance and potential troubleshooting for those not well-versed in systems management.

Steering Sensitivity: Some sailors may find the helm a bit more sensitive compared to other cruising boats, which can require adjustment in technique for both new and experienced sailors.
