Introducing the Hunter 38 Sloop, a beautifully crafted vessel from 2007, measuring an impressive 38 feet in overall length. This monohull features a sleek fiberglass hull with a fin keel, ensuring stability and performance on the water. Powered by a reliable Yanmar inboard diesel engine, it delivers 29 horsepower, allowing for a cruising speed of 6 knots and a maximum hull speed of 7.89 knots. The interior offers comfortable accommodations with two cabins and one head, perfect for relaxing after a day of sailing. Equipped with an electric windlass, this boat combines convenience with modern technology, making anchoring a breeze. The Hunter 38 is designed for both leisure and adventure, promising memorable experiences on the open water. Whether you're planning a weekend getaway or an extended cruise, the "Mid Life Crisis" is ready to meet your sailing aspirations with style and performance.
The Hunter 38 is a Glenn Henderson–designed production cruiser that set out to balance the brand’s traditional focus on comfort with noticeably improved performance and handling. It carries a fine, near‑plumb bow and extended 34‑foot‑8‑inch waterline forward, coupled with a very beamy stern that pushes volume and cockpit space aft, making the boat faster “on paper” than several contemporaries in its size range while still looking relatively sleek from abeam. Under the waterline, a fin keel and large spade rudder are engineered to share the lift normally provided mostly by the keel, contributing to a responsive feel under sail and easy maneuvering in tight quarters. Displacing about 18,300 pounds with roughly one‑third of that in ballast and a fractional B&R rig that concentrates power in a big mainsail, the 38 is designed to be easily driven, with limited pitching and a light, balanced helm when properly trimmed.
On deck, the Hunter 38 is dominated by a very large, social cockpit made possible by its nearly 13‑foot beam carried well aft, including 6‑foot‑long seats, twin stern “pod” seats, and a folding destroyer‑type wheel that opens up the walkthrough transom when at anchor or dockside. A stainless arch carries the mainsheet traveler and houses cockpit speakers and lights, placing mainsail controls within reach of the helm and keeping sheets off the cockpit sole, which suits singlehanding and casual daysailing, even if the arch adds some weight and windage aloft. Forward, wide side decks, a substantial molded toerail, sensible lifeline heights, and diamond‑pattern nonskid support safe movement, while recessed Lewmar hatches and large tinted fixed ports bring plenty of light and air below for extended cruising.
Belowdecks, the Hunter 38 leans hard into volume and livability, with 6‑foot‑6‑inch headroom in the main saloon, warm teak joinery, and a low‑maintenance Everwear laminate sole that replaces traditional teak and holly. The standard “owner’s” layout places an L‑shaped galley with Corian countertops and dual stainless sinks to starboard of the companionway, a proper nav station to port, and a generous saloon amidships with long settees and a full dining table, plus a notably large aft stateroom with a queen‑size athwartships berth and excellent engine access via a dual‑purpose vanity/engine box. A forward cabin for two and a single, cleverly arranged head with separate shower stall—accessible from both saloon and aft cabin—round out a layout that Practical Sailor found better finished than earlier Hunters and well proportioned to how owners actually use a 38‑footer, especially those prioritizing comfort without giving up basic sailing performance.
