"Joyful" has been actively sailing between the Great Lakes and the Northeast US for the last 5 summers. She has benefitted from many upgrades during this time and is very well equipped for cruising in any waters. With her in-mast Stoway main and roller furling headsail, she is easy to handle yet caries enough sail area to be competitive on the race course. With nearly 80 built, the SW 42 is a proven design that has crossed oceans and circumnavigated the globe. Her Hinckley pedigree is one of the top in the luxury sailboat market and the SW 42 has earned the respect of the most discriminating sailors. With recent upgrades like new bow thruster, new holding tank, new autopilot, new engine mounts, new electronics, new Asymmetric sail, new inverter, new Epirb and 6-man life-raft, "Joyful" is an excellent example of this popular cruising sailboat and well equipped for any adventure.
Like many popular Hinckley SW 42's, JOYFUL has put many miles under her keel since being launched in 1984. She has crossed the Atlantic to explore Scandinavia and the British Isles, cruised the Caribbean from Anegada to Grenada, completed the Marion-Bermuda race 3 times and explored nearly every harbor between Virginia to Nova Scotia. She has also spent significant time cruising in the Great Lakes. Joyful has had 4 owners since new. She is currently in the water on Mount Desert Island, Maine where she will be stored for the winter.
Hand laid fiberglass hull and deck. Hull is cored with Airex for additional strength and minimal weight. The core is deleted and the hull reinforced with additional laminations in all high-stress areas. Hull stringers are cored with Airex and bonded to the hull and integrated with the mast step and engine mounts to form a single unit that is strong and light. Hull laminate is fabricated of unidirectional glass for a better strength/weight ratio. The deck is set on a 6" hull flange, then glued and bolted in place.
Centerboard is fiberglass with a bronze leading edge and drops from the fixed fin keel. It is operated by a cable and Merriman winch under the dodger. The rudder is composite and skeg-hung.
