Grand Banks 54: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Grand Banks 54 is a thoughtfully designed owner-operator yacht available with two propulsion options: Volvo Penta IPS or traditional straight shafts. The test vessel featured twin Volvo Penta D11 engines, each producing 725 horsepower, paired with straight shafts. This model emphasizes balance, ease of handling, and practical access to mechanical systems, making it well-suited for both cruising and close-quarters maneuvering.

Engine Room and Mechanical Layout

Access to the engine room and lazarette is conveniently located in the cockpit through a large hatch equipped with an internal grab handle. The lazarette offers ample space with over four feet of headroom and multiple access panels for mechanical components and storage. The engine room itself is spacious, with five feet of overhead clearance and comprehensive sound insulation for a quiet ride. It houses twin Volvo Penta D11 engines with exhaust systems routed to the lazarette, featuring exhaust and water separators to minimize environmental impact. Additional equipment includes Humphrey stabilizer fins, Raycor fuel filters, a 15 kW Fisher Panda generator, and vibration-reducing engine mounts. Notably, the engines are positioned just aft of the midship line to optimize balance and ride quality, rather than being shifted aft to accommodate additional staterooms.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The Grand Banks 54 features a symmetrical deck layout with side decks starting at 15 inches wide, expanding to 18 inches forward, and protected by 29-inch high rails at the bow area. Boarding gates on both sides open easily with spring-loaded latches, and overhead protection extends seven feet with integrated lighting. The bow deck includes an elevated platform for the ground tackle, which is recessed to keep the area clean. Anchoring equipment comprises a Muir windlass with three control stations and an ultra-anchor on an all-chain rode. The road locker offers generous storage with gas strut support and a freshwater washdown. The swim platform is equipped with a 50-amp shore power cord on an electric reel, and cleats and chocks are robustly constructed and thoughtfully drained to prevent water accumulation.

Helm Stations and Handling

The flybridge helm is center-mounted and ergonomically designed with a carbon fiber panel housing twin 17-inch multifunction displays, autopilot, bow and stern thruster controls, stabilizer trim tabs, and digital throttle and shift controls. Two comfortable Stidd helm seats provide swivel, slide, recline, and adjustable armrests and footrests. The main deck helm is positioned ahead of a double-wide island seat with a flip-up bolster, offering six feet, six inches of headroom and an adjacent observer station elevated by ten inches. This helm features twin 17-inch displays, autopilot, spotlight control, proportional electric stern thrusters with hold functions, stabilizer controls, and a vertically mounted 20-inch wheel. A standout feature is the opening side door that provides direct access to the side deck, facilitating single-handed docking. Additionally, three salon windows drop down to allow communication with dockside crew. Both helm stations prioritize functionality and visibility, although some minor storage conveniences such as drink holders and charging stations could enhance usability.

Performance and Sea Trial

With an estimated test weight of approximately 55,800 pounds including fuel, water, and crew, the Grand Banks 54 achieved a top speed of 29 knots at 2450 RPM. Fuel consumption and range scale linearly with speed reduction; at a minimum planing speed of 11.8 knots, the vessel burns 14 gallons per hour, yielding a range of over 680 nautical miles. Reducing speed to 9.6 knots extends the range to more than 1,100 nautical miles while maintaining a 10% fuel reserve. Low-speed handling is excellent, aided by a low-speed clutch that prevents sudden surges when maneuvering in tight spaces. The boat exhibits a slight bow-high attitude underway, contributing to a smooth and stable ride with minimal bow rise. Turning performance is notable, with a tight turning radius and effective stabilizer support maintaining vessel levelness during maneuvers. The hull demonstrates no pounding or slapping even when crossing wakes or encountering quartering seas, maintaining a straight and true course. Docking trials highlighted the ease of single-handed operation, with proportional thrusters and side deck access doors greatly simplifying close-quarters handling.

Conclusion

The Grand Banks 54 impresses as a well-balanced, thoughtfully engineered yacht that prioritizes owner-operator usability without compromising performance or comfort. Its mechanical layout facilitates maintenance, while its twin helm stations provide excellent visibility and control. The vessel’s handling characteristics, both at low and cruising speeds, reflect careful design attention to balance and responsiveness. Practical features such as side deck access doors and drop-down salon windows enhance operational convenience, making the 54 a capable and comfortable choice for extended cruising and close-quarters maneuvering.
