Powerboat Guide Description

With over 1,500 delivered, the Grand Banks 42 is easily the most successful trawler design ever produced. The mahogany construction of the original 42 Classic gave way to fiberglass in late 1973, and in 1991 the hull was lengthened and widened by a few inches to add additional interior volume, mostly in the forward stateroom and galley area as well as in the engine room. With her long keel, hard chines, and a deep forefoot, the 42 Classic ranks among the most comfortable and seaworthy cruising yachts in her class. Accommodations include a forward stateroom with a large V-berth, forward head with shower, a well appointed portside galley, starboard lower helm with deck door, large L-shaped settee with teak table, portside settee, and an owner’s stateroom.(Note that early models have single beds in the aft stateroom.) Large salon windows provide panoramic views of the water, and the small aft cockpit is ideal for line handling. Among many engine options, twin 210hp Cat diesels cruise at 9–10 knots

The Biggest Pros and Cons

The 1986 Grand Banks 42 Classic is a well-regarded trawler known for its timeless design and solid construction. Here are some of the key pros and cons of this model:

Pros

Classic Styling: The Grand Banks 42 Classic features a traditional, elegant profile with teak wood accents and a spacious flybridge, appealing to those who appreciate a vintage aesthetic.

Solid Build Quality: Known for its robust fiberglass hull and quality craftsmanship, this boat offers durability and a strong, seaworthy feel.

Spacious Interior: The 42 Classic provides comfortable living spaces, including a roomy salon, well-equipped galley, and multiple sleeping quarters, making it ideal for extended cruising.

Good Stability and Handling: Designed as a trawler, it offers excellent stability and fuel efficiency at moderate speeds, perfect for long-distance voyages.

Reliable Engines: Many 1986 models are equipped with dependable twin diesel engines, offering a good balance of power and fuel economy.

Cons

Age-Related Maintenance: Being a vessel from 1986, it may require ongoing upkeep and potential upgrades to systems like electrical, plumbing, and navigation to meet modern standards.

Slower Speeds: As a true trawler, the 42 Classic is not designed for high-speed cruising and typically cruises at slower speeds compared to contemporary yachts.

Heavier Weight: Its solid construction results in a heavier boat, which can affect handling in some conditions and may require a larger engine for optimal performance.

Cost of Teak Maintenance: The extensive use of teak wood, while beautiful, demands regular maintenance and can be costly to preserve.

Limited Modern Amenities: Some owners may find the onboard technology and amenities outdated compared to newer models, necessitating upgrades for enhanced comfort and convenience.
