Formula Cruiser: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Formula 380 SSC is the latest addition to Formula's SuperSport crossover lineup, notable for being the first model in the series equipped with stern drive propulsion. Designed as a mid-sized dayboat with a spacious open swim platform and a cabin suitable for weekend stays, the 380 SSC measures 38 feet in length overall with an 11 foot 6 inch beam and a draft of 41 inches. It features a double-step hull with a 21-degree dead rise and twin stern quarter sponsons to enhance stability and buoyancy. The boat weighs approximately 21,200 pounds dry and has a bridge clearance of 9 feet 4 inches.

Exterior Design and Cockpit

At the stern, the 380 SSC boasts a full-beam swim platform measuring 3 feet 6 inches fore and aft, with an optional hydraulic extension adding 2 feet. This platform lowers at the push of a button, facilitating water sports and providing a safe area for swimmers since the propellers are positioned forward, away from the platform. Stainless steel rails, pull-up cleats, and cup holders enhance usability, while optional accessories such as a stand-up paddleboard rack and a removable standing-height cocktail table add to the boat's entertainment capabilities. The cockpit is a single-level area extending from the stern to the bow, featuring a double-wide lounge to starboard with adjustable backrests and a horseshoe-shaped lounge to port seating six. Storage is integrated beneath all seating, and dedicated slots accommodate Corian tables that can be configured for dining or converted into a sun pad. Overhead, a full-width hardtop includes six JL Audio speakers, courtesy lighting, and a motorized sunroof over seven feet wide, with an optional retractable shade for additional protection. The cockpit galley is equipped with a Corian countertop, sink with slide-away cover, a 3 cubic foot refrigerator, storage drawers, and an optional Kenyon electric grill, enhancing onboard entertaining.

Helm and Navigation

The helm station is positioned to starboard and features a compass aligned with the steering wheel, dual 15-inch Raymarine multifunction displays, and a 7-inch Mercury VesselView engine monitoring screen. The dash panel is available in charcoal or mocha finishes to reduce glare. Controls include a Mercury joystick, hydraulic trim tabs with LED indicators, digital throttle and shift controls, and remote controls for the multifunction displays. The helm seats accommodate the captain and two companions with individual flip-up bolsters, allowing standing operation with ample headroom. Ergonomic considerations extend to angled footrests and a windshield header meeting ABYC height standards for visibility and protection.

Bow Area

The bow area offers forward-facing seating for three with hinged cushions providing ample storage underneath. The design incorporates gunnel openings with cup holders, rails, and USB charging ports. Two Corian tables can be installed at dining height or lowered to create a large lounging area. An optional bow awning with stainless steel framing is available, utilizing dedicated storage for removable plugs in the bow rails. The anchor locker features a gas-strut-assisted hatch, a standard ground tackle package with a Lumar windlass, polished stainless steel anchor, and 150 feet of all-chain rode accessible via a port-side entry.

Interior Living Spaces

Accessed via a center entry door from the bow, the cabin offers a spacious interior with 6 feet 5 inches of overhead clearance. The main electrical panel is conveniently located near the entry steps. The galley includes a Corian countertop with a sliding cover over the sink, a microwave oven, storage compartments, and a drawer for silverware. A 32-inch TV is standard, and cabinetry is available in various finishes such as walnut and washed oak. The dinette area features a Corian table and ultra-leather upholstery, which can be converted into a sleeping berth measuring 80 inches in length, suitable for two occupants. Side windows have shades that close from the outside, and storage is thoughtfully integrated throughout.

Private Accommodations and Head

The aft cabin is equipped with a mattress measuring 76 by 60 inches and provides 30 inches of sitting headroom. It includes speakers and USB charging ports integrated into the headboard. The head compartment offers 6 feet 2 inches of headroom and features a full fiberglass wet head with a shower, privacy curtain, porcelain VacuFlush toilet with a 37-gallon holding tank, and a 43-gallon freshwater capacity. The Corian countertop houses a deep sink with storage for wastebasket and toilet paper. A large opening port provides natural light and ventilation, complemented by an exhaust fan and overhead cabinets.

Power and Performance

Our test boat was outfitted with optional twin Mercury Racing 520 horsepower 8.6-liter engines paired with Bravo 3 stern drives, mounted on L-angle brackets secured with through bolts and backing plates. The standard power package includes twin 8.2-liter 430 horsepower engines, both featuring joystick control. The engine compartment also houses a fire suppression system, a centrally positioned sea chest for system drainage, four batteries, an 80-amp charger, and an optional 7.5 kW Westerbeke generator located beneath the cockpit deck. Twin 125-gallon fuel tanks are positioned outboard on either side of the engine compartment. Performance testing showed a top speed of 51.5 mph at 5020 RPM and a best cruise speed of 38.7 mph at 4000 RPM, with a fuel burn of 47.4 gallons per hour yielding a range of approximately 183 statute miles with a 10% fuel reserve. The boat planes in 10 seconds, reaches 20 mph in 16.2 seconds, and 30 mph in 24.4 seconds. The hull design balances speed and comfort, effectively handling wakes and carving cleanly through turns, though aggressive maneuvers induce noticeable lean. Docking is facilitated by Mercury's joystick piloting system, enhancing control for a vessel over 40 feet in length.

Build Quality and Finish

Formula distinguishes itself by using a high-gloss painted hull finish rather than traditional gel coat, which tends to oxidize and require extensive maintenance. The hull is finished with Exalta Chroma paint—the same used on high-end sports cars—covered with an Imron clear coat and polished extensively to achieve a superior glossy appearance. This finish contributes to the boat's standout aesthetics and durability, reinforcing Formula's reputation for quality craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Conclusion

The Formula 380 SSC successfully integrates performance, design, and quality craftsmanship into a versatile mid-sized crossover dayboat with overnight accommodations. Its spacious swim platform, well-appointed cockpit and galley, comfortable interior living spaces, and powerful propulsion options make it suitable for both day cruising and weekend getaways. The boat's thoughtful ergonomics, advanced technology, and premium finishes reflect Formula's commitment to delivering a high-quality boating experience. Overall, the 380 SSC meets the expectations of discerning boaters seeking a blend of entertainment, comfort, and performance.
