Own a remarkable piece of US maritime history – the famous “Riptide” as featured in the hit TV series named after her from the 1980’s, featuring Perry King and Joe Penny and hosting famous onboard guests such as Geena Davis, George Clooney and dozens of actors from iconic 1980’s TV shows like the Love Boat and A-team.
Imagine solving cases as a private eye on board this amazing and comfortable vessel. The Riptide made several dozen Television appearances for three years, gracing the Cover of TV Guide – as well as immortalized and spoofed in Mad Magazine! (we have the issue!) Riptide also has a cameo on the Leonardo di Caprio film – The Aviator.
Going back in time – and sporting different names, the Riptide has a pedigree that is nearly unmatched for historical interest. Originally built by the ELCO motor yacht company – she was the flagship vessel of this important East Coast boat builder (now making electric powertrains) and was sold to the famous hotelier – Howard Johnson as his personal vessel. It was considered so significant that LIFE magazine documented her maiden voyage from New York City to Florida. We have the original magazine and images from this time! Imagine the Riptide motoring over 20mph past the Statue of liberty! Shortly thereafter she was moved to the Great Lakes and even served a stint as a US Coast Guard vessel patrolling Lake Erie during World War 2.
After the war, one of the nation’s most well-known gangsters – Mo Dalitz (Mr. Las Vegas) – friend to Al Capone, the notorious Westy’s and later to Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Bugsy Siegal, bought Riptide & used it for personal use. He moved her to Lake Mead as the official “showboat” of his Desert Inn hotel – a landmark of old Vegas. If boats could talk it would have unbelievable stories of parties, questionable behavior and larger than life visitors! Movies stars, models, actors, singers and crime bosses spent time on her lovely decks.
Following her Hollywood heyday of the 1980’s and early 1990’s she was brought to the Seattle area by the previous owners and lovingly restored. In 2024 she was purchased by well known architect – Jason F. McLennan and his wife Tracy and all systems modernized. Set seas again with the glamor of the 1930’s but with modern upgrades of today onboard. The last two owners have spent hours and tens of thousands of dollars restoring and upgrading her to her amazing current condition. There is nothing like Riptide anywhere to be found.
