Carver Yachts 366 Motoryacht: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Carver 366 motor yacht is an aft cabin design that builds upon the earlier 346 model, incorporating several new improvements and enhancements. This 36-foot yacht combines the spaciousness and amenities of a larger boat with the convenience of a manageable size. It offers a blend of yacht and express cruiser qualities, emphasizing livability and innovative design features.

Exterior Design and Bridge

Boarding the Carver 366 is facilitated by an integral transom or a port-side fantail. The transom area includes a swim ladder, shower, and molded-in steps with enclosed storage. Molded stairs lead up from the transom to a protected patio area, which is spacious enough for various furniture arrangements and shielded from wind by two acrylic doors. Forward of the patio is a center-line helm station equipped with two pedestal seats and a tilt steering wheel. The helm's gauges are well-organized and easily readable, enhancing operational convenience.

Interior Living Spaces

Inside, the 366 features a full-beam salon free of bulkheads, creating an open and airy cabin environment. On the port side, an L-shaped lounge includes an optional sleeper sofa, while the dinette comfortably seats four adults and is complemented by an entertainment center with CD and DVD players. The galley is designed in an L-shaped, side-by-side configuration, maximizing storage and functionality. It is equipped with a sink, two-burner stove, microwave, refrigerator-freezer, coffee maker, and ample storage space, comparable in size and convenience to a condominium kitchen.

Private Accommodations

The yacht offers two full staterooms. The forward stateroom features a large double berth, two opening port windows, an escape hatch, and a flip-down flat-screen television with DVD player. It has convenient access to its own head and shower, along with generous overhead storage and a full-size hanging locker with an additional storage cabinet. The owner's stateroom, located aft, provides substantial storage including a full-size hanging locker, and includes a third TV-DVD combo. The master head is equipped with a separate shower stall, enhancing privacy and comfort.

Power and Performance

The Carver 366 measures 36 feet 11 inches in length, with a beam of 13 feet 2 inches and a dry weight of 21,800 pounds. It carries 196 gallons of fuel, making it well-suited for extended cruising. Powered by twin 385-horsepower Crusader 8.1 EFI engines, the yacht achieved a top speed of 37.1 miles per hour at 4,400 RPM during testing in choppy waters. Its most efficient cruising speed was 27.3 miles per hour at 3,500 RPM, with a fuel consumption of 40.8 gallons per hour, yielding a range of approximately 118 miles. The engine room is cleanly installed with straight inboards mounted fore and aft, providing excellent access and maintenance convenience, including built-in access ports for shaft locks and dripless shaft seals.

Conclusion

The Carver 366 motor yacht successfully delivers the comforts and amenities of a larger yacht within a 36-foot package. Its spacious salon, well-equipped galley, and two luxurious staterooms positioned fore and aft make it an ideal choice for extended cruising. The thoughtful design improvements, combined with solid performance and practical features, underscore the 366's appeal as a versatile and comfortable motor yacht.
