"HAWK" is a Ted Brewer designed 12.8 (42 feet LOA) cruising yacht. In 1983 she was built at the Ft. Myers Yacht and Shipbuilding Yard in Ft. Myers, Florida. The 12.8 Brewer design was commissioned by a group of racing yachtsmen who were members of the Knickerbocker Yacht Club on Long Island NY. These sailors all had extensive racing credentials along with substantial coastal and offshore experience in a variety of vessels including the Bermuda 40 and Hinckley Pilot. The syndicate wanted to construct their last "Dream Boat" which had to be graceful and seaworthy while not compromising on creature comforts. Ted Brewer was charged with designing a comfortable and safe platform for extended cruising. The yacht had to perform on all points of sail such as light air conditions that prevailed on Long Island Sound and heavy weather environments found on off shore cruising.
Brewer took the opportunity to refine his previous designs and included a cutaway forefoot, the "Brewer Bite", and a centerboard to provide additional lift for sailing upwind. Raised bulwarks and a low profile cockpit also contribute to the characteristics of this sea kindly boat that is easily managed by a couple. Twin jib furlers and an in mast furling system on the mainsail are all handled from the safety of the enclosed cockpit.
