Beautiful, lift kept, (never bottom painted), under cover Back Cove 26  Hard top with enclosure, bow/stern thrusters, Optional upgraded Yanmar 240, ONLY 230 hours and just serviced, fresh wax, VERY clean, turn key pristine boat!
The style and grace of the Maine lobster boat has long been admired by boaters throughout the world. No builder blends the classical looks with modern construction better than Back Cove Yachts, a division of Sabre Yacht Corporation.

The interior accommodation of the BC 26 is bright and airy. Finished in hand varnished American Cherry, her interior joinery is finely built by Maine craftsman. The space is warming, welcoming and gives a sense of luxury found on much larger yachts. A vee berth with drop down, inlaid table sleeps two comfortably. A full stand up head compartment with privacy door, vanity and sink makes accommodations of other boats in this size range seem inadequate. Her galley includes a 120V AC/12 VDC fridge, stainless steel sink, microwave oven and stove for meal preparation. There’s plenty of storage for a long weekend.

The helm and cockpit arrangements makes for a comfortable captain and mate’s seats just at the right height for safest and best view of the waters ahead. Her large helm pod is sized to suit a good array of navigational electronics. A generous aft cockpit, with a storage lazzarette below, offers comfortable coamings for fishing and plenty of space for socializing with friends and family with the seating aft. Engine access could not better.

Her entire helm deck rises on gas shocks to reveal all of the engine service points and mechanical and electrical systems. No other yachts in the class can claim a better mechanical layout. A bow and stern thruster, diesel engine, dripless shaft seal and zinc saver are but a few examples of the standard equipment found on a Back Cove 26. She is a real head turner in every harbor she enters.  Priced attractively, Owner is looking for offers.

Back Cove 26: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Batcove 26 is a new addition to the Batcove Yachts lineup, serving as a smaller sister model to the Batcove 29. Rooted in the traditional down east yacht design, the 26 draws inspiration from the Spoonbill Lobster Boat heritage, combining classic styling with modern functionality. This model represents Batcove's continued progress, with the company currently producing multiple units monthly and focusing on delivering quality craftsmanship and performance.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The Batcove 26 features a hull with a slight tumblehome aft, a reverse transom, deep V shape, and prop pockets, contributing to its traditional aesthetic and seaworthy performance. The bow is protected by heavy-duty 1-inch 316 stainless steel rails, and the deck incorporates molded-in aggressive grip surfaces in contrasting tints for safety and style. A large anchor locker provides ample storage for ground tackle. The raised cabin top includes a centrally located large hatch vent, while the windshield is composed of three windows with side pop-out vents for ventilation. A wide walkway with molded steps leads from the bow to the cockpit, facilitating easy movement around the boat. The rear activity deck is equipped with two removable corner seats and under-hatch storage for fenders and fuel tank access. The swim platform at the stern is complemented by a custom casting and a deep-reach telescoping swim ladder, enhancing water access.

Helm and Controls

The helm station is designed for comfort and functionality, featuring seats with slide and swivel adjustments as well as under-seat storage. Cushions are removable for ease of maintenance. The helm console offers ample space for optional electronics installations. Controls are logically arranged, with rocker switches and a 12-volt socket positioned to the left of the hydraulic tilt wheel, alongside a Clarion stereo remote. To the right, operators find bow plane controls and a joystick for the bow thruster. The engine hatch is manually operated and designed for effortless lifting, providing convenient access to the engine compartment.

Engine and Maintenance Access

Powered by an optional 240 horsepower Yanmar engine, the Batcove 26 cruises comfortably at 3,000 RPM, achieving a speed of 25.6 miles per hour with an estimated range of 253 miles. The engine compartment is spacious enough to allow routine maintenance tasks, including access to batteries, oil dipsticks, and C-strainers. The hatch design facilitates easy opening without the need for electric assistance, underscoring the boat's practical engineering.

Interior Living Spaces

Below deck, the cabin layout is thoughtfully arranged to maximize comfort and utility. The starboard side houses the galley, which includes a deep sink, microwave, single burner cooktop, ample storage, and a refrigerator. Adjacent to the galley is a V-shaped dinette that serves as a relaxing area for dining or lounging. The table can be lowered and combined with cushions to convert the space into a large berth. The port side features a head compartment equipped with a portable light and air system, vanity, and a spacious toilet area, providing essential amenities for extended outings.

Dimensions and Performance

The Batcove 26 measures 26 feet 6 inches in length overall with a beam of 9 feet 2 inches. It displaces 8,500 pounds and has a draft of 2 feet 6 inches. Fuel capacity is 100 gallons, complemented by a 30-gallon freshwater tank. Performance testing with two people aboard and a full fuel load revealed a best cruising speed of 25.6 miles per hour at 3,000 RPM, with a top speed just under 30 miles per hour at 3,450 RPM. At top speed, the boat can cover approximately 204 miles on a full tank. The vessel planes quickly, achieving this state in 7.3 seconds, demonstrating efficient acceleration and handling.

Conclusion

The Batcove 26 successfully blends traditional design elements with modern performance and practical features. Its spacious and well-equipped interior, combined with thoughtful exterior details and reliable power, make it a versatile option for those seeking a classic down east yacht experience. The boat's performance metrics confirm its capability and efficiency, inviting potential owners to experience it firsthand through a test drive at local dealerships.

The Biggest Pros and Cons

The 2006 Back Cove 26 is a popular coastal cruiser known for its blend of classic styling and practical performance. Here are some of the pros and cons of this model:

Pros

Solid Construction: Built with a robust fiberglass hull, the Back Cove 26 offers durability and a smooth ride in various sea conditions.

Efficient Performance: Powered typically by a reliable single diesel engine, it delivers good fuel economy and steady cruising speeds.

Classic Design: Its traditional Downeast styling with a raised pilothouse and large windows provides excellent visibility and timeless appeal.

Comfortable Layout: The interior is well-appointed for a 26-foot boat, featuring a cozy cabin with sleeping accommodations, a functional galley, and a private head.

Ease of Handling: The manageable size makes it easy to maneuver both in tight marinas and offshore, suitable for single-handed or couple cruising.

Versatility: Ideal for day cruising, weekend getaways, and light fishing excursions.

Cons

Limited Space: While comfortable for its size, the cabin can feel cramped for extended stays or when accommodating several guests.

Single Engine: Although efficient, having only one engine means less redundancy in case of mechanical issues compared to twin-engine setups.

Speed Limitations: Designed more for cruising comfort than speed, it may not satisfy those seeking high-performance capabilities.

Older Model: Being a 2006 model, some systems and equipment might require updating or maintenance to meet modern standards.

Storage Constraints: Storage space is somewhat limited, which can be a challenge for longer trips requiring more gear.
