Boat Features

The Chaparral Surf Series adapts the builder's stern-drive bowriders into wakesurf-capable boats by combining a forward drive with ballast and a surf gate. Chaparral holds a license agreement with Malibu, so these chaparral surf boats run the Malibu Surf Gate, a system that moves the gate outside the hull and shifts the boat slightly off its axis to shape a cleaner wave without piling on extra ballast weight. The lineup spans roughly 21 to 28 feet, and the boats suit families that still want to tie up, drop anchor and swim rather than commit fully to a dedicated wakeboard hull.

Power runs on Volvo Penta forward drives. The 2022 28 Surf carries a 430-horsepower Volvo Penta V8 forward drive, which surfs with the pulling authority of an inboard while staying easy to drive from the helm. A 2018 21 Surf in the H2O trim uses a 240-horsepower Volvo Penta V6 with Volvo's quick-drain system. The wave behind the larger boat is strong on the surf side; behind the tower, the wakeboarding wake is suited to beginner and intermediate riders rather than a wakeboard-specific boat. One handling trait to plan for: forward-drive hulls carry noticeable bow rise before planing, so the longer the boat, the higher the nose sits unless weight is added forward.

The helm on the 2022 28 Surf uses a Simrad dual-screen system exclusive to Chaparral that year, with instruments and navigation on one screen and surf controls on the other. From the dash you set the surf gate left or right, adjust speed control and manage ballast, plus standard buttons for nav lights, anchor, bilge, horn and the electric folding tower that lowers to clear a bridge or for storage. Touchscreen helms are convenient but a known long-term expense, with screen replacements that can run into the thousands.

The stern is the defining feature. An electric platform drops down for water access, and a rear lounge pulls down so passengers can sit upright about a foot off the deck rather than near the waterline. Chaparral was early to adopt the Cobalt-style fold-down swim deck, which helps swimmers and kids climb in and out; the electronic version is held by a button for several seconds to deploy. The back deck is deep and large, with room to both play at the transom and seat people without blocking the swim path.

Inside, the 28 Surf is yacht certified, measures 28 feet long with an 8-foot-6-inch beam, and includes a head, rotating and sliding captain and passenger chairs, a storage chest, a cooler, under-floor storage and hinged pop-up bow seats. The hardtop bimini is a pricier option, adding glass sunroof panels and the electric folding tower, though that hardtop leaves no room for board racks; the alternate bimini keeps board-rack space. The 2018 21 Surf seats 12, carries a wakeboard tower with board racks and ships on a tandem-axle trailer.

The main trade-off when shopping these boats is interior space versus length. The surf layout pushes seating into the rear lounge, so a 26-foot surf model offers cockpit seating closer to an older 23- or 24-foot bowrider, meaning buyers with a slip-length limit may need a larger boat for the same usable seating. Filling the ballast also consumes the under-floor storage. Used Chaparral surf boats for sale, including clean 21 Surf examples, turn up alongside current models, so check ballast fit, helm electronics and how the boat sits at surf speed before you buy.
