Boat Features

The Azimut 55 is a three-cabin motor yacht from the Italian builder Azimut, sold in several configurations that share a roughly 17-meter, nearly 57-foot hull. Buyers shopping an Azimut 55 for sale will find the 55 Flybridge with its full upper deck, the sportier 55S with a single-level main deck, and the earlier 55E (Evolution) built around Caterpillar power. All three carry the modern European styling Azimut is known for, including hull-side windows that bring natural light into the staterooms below the waterline.

The 55S stands apart for its propulsion: three Volvo Penta D6 IPS 600 engines rated 435 horsepower each, for a combined 1,300 horsepower, each turning a pair of forward-facing contra-rotating propellers. A joystick controls all three drives independently, so each pod can angle separately for close-quarters docking. The boat cruises comfortably at 30 knots and reaches a top speed of 35 knots with all three engines running. At 20 knots, noise measures 66 dBA. The IPS arrangement delivers more than 20 percent higher dynamic efficiency than a traditional shaft drive, which speaks directly to 55S fuel consumption. Carbon fiber is used in the bulkheads, garage supports and the hull section nearest the pods.

The 2019 Azimut 55 Flybridge runs on twin 800-horsepower MAN engines with joystick control plus bow and stern thrusters, and is fitted with a Seakeeper gyro stabilizer. It offers two helm stations, a lower station and the flybridge, both with flush-mounted Raymarine electronics. The flybridge carries a hardtop with a manual sunroof, an electric grill, fresh-water sink, refrigerator and U-shaped seating around a synthetic marble table for up to eight. The 55E and 55 Evolution versions use twin Caterpillar diesels with a single central helm, Raymarine autopilot and chartplotters, and a Hydron docking remote.

On deck, the hydraulic swim platform holds up to 800 pounds for a Williams jet tender or jet ski, and a tender garage opens to extend the swim platform further. Teak runs across the cockpit, gunnels and platform. A three-piece sliding door and a motorized drop-down window join the salon and galley to the cockpit on one level, while a remote-controlled sun shade slides out over the aft seating. A concealed crew cabin sits in the bow or under the aft lazarette, usable as a private stateroom or storage.

The Azimut 55 interior follows a three-cabin, two-head layout. The galley runs along the port side with a full-size refrigerator, Miele appliances on the flybridge model and a three- or four-burner stovetop. The full-beam master features hull-side windows with opening ports, an island or diagonal berth, cedar-lined lockers, a safe and a private head with a separate shower. A forward VIP and a twin or bunk guest cabin complete the 55S layout, with a concealed washer-dryer outside the master.

When weighing a used 55, check the staterooms for the sagging wall and ceiling panels common to earlier Azimuts, since replacing them is a known refit item. Confirm engine and generator service history, as later boats may carry recent additions like a 2024 Kohler generator, new house battery banks or an aftermarket hydraulic swim platform. The triple-engine 55S in particular rewards a buyer who values its handling and efficiency over a conventional twin-engine setup.
