"The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten" - Lee S Wilbur.
If you have ever wondered about the mystique of "Downeast" boats, why they "look" the way they do then you should investigate the reputation of the Wilbur 34'. The traditional shapes on this elegant boat translate into a powerfully comfortable safe ride in very challenging sea conditions. (Downeast hull designs are known for their soft, dry ride. They ride at relatively flat angles at all speed ranges. Moreover, like many private airplanes, their single engine design cuts fuel and maintenance costs in half while also providing a keel that gives the best protection to the propeller and rudder possible.
Calypso is the 59th out of 74 34' Wilbur's built!
CALYPSO was an open checkbook build, and was the most highly-customized and heavily-optioned Wilbur 34 of the entire series. Every option on the Wilbur 34 construction sheet was included in the boat, plus additional fully-custom features.
While many boats of this type are built in semi-open “picnic” or “weekender” configurations, CALYPSO was built for serious coastal cruising in style and comfort, with extensive interior joiner-work and elegant finishing details.
The deckhouse is 18” longer than the Wilbur 34 “cruiser” deckhouse, giving more interior volume while maintaining a large cockpit. The flying bridge provides another outdoor living / entertaining area as well serving as a second fully-equipped station for operating the boat.
The owner since 2013 is a well-known marine industry professional who has cruised CALYPSO from south Florida to far Downeast Maine. Since late 2014, the boat has been kept and used in Maine, stored inside in the winter and moored in Northeast Harbor for much of the summer when not cruising Penobscot Bay and points east. CALYPSO has been consistently and thoughtfully updated in both systems and equipment by the current owner to ensure reliability and longevity.
In 2023, the boat underwent a $100,000 electrical and mechanical refit at Billings Diesel and Marine in Stonington, Maine, including replacement of the main engine. Billings is the premier service and re-powering yard for Maine’s hard-working lobstering fleet.
A new suite of state-of-the-art GARMIN electronics was installed in 2025, detailed in the electronics section below.
Most of the original teak handrails have been replaced with custom stainless steel handrails fabricated by NAUTILUS ENGINEERING.
A full-width teak swim/boarding platform attached to the transom facilitates boarding both the boat and the dinghy.
The cockpit measures 8.5’ in width between the coamings, with a fore-and-aft length of 7’. It is a wonderful outdoor living space for cocktails, dinner, your morning coffee, or simply chatting with friends, with room for deck chairs and a small table.
There is space under the deck overhangs for fender storage or other portable equipment.
The cockpit contains a dedicated propane locker with two 10-pound aluminum tanks, new in 2015. The propane regulator was replaced at the same time.
There is a five cubic foot FRIGIBAR refrigerator/freezer in the cockpit on the starboard side, opposite the propane locker. This operates on shore power, generator power, or the inverter, and features an air-cooled compressor. It is currently decommissioned and used as a large food pantry. It was used as a freezer when the boat was berthed at a private dock under previous ownership, as well as while the boat was cruising from Florida to Maine in 2014.
There is storage under the cockpit sole for backup ground tackle, mooring lines and other loose gear in storage bins. The cockpit sole hatch also gives access to the steering gear and the Racor filters for the generator and main engine.
The large flying bridge brings provides a totally different perspective on your surroundings, offering a bird’s eye view of everything around you. It is very useful when docking or maneuvering, particularly in tight situations. The flying bridge is also a great location for operating the boat in good weather, and was used constantly when cruising the inland waterway and coastal waters between Florida and Maine.
The flying bridge helm station completely replicates every function found at the lower helm, including operation of the anchor windlass, thruster, trim tabs, autopilot, VHF radio, etc.
There is comfortable built-in seating for four, with storage below, and room for additional deck chairs if desired. The upper deck is surrounded by a continuous stainless steel railing for security, and is accessed by a fixed stainless steel cockpit ladder with teak treads.
With its large Bimini top providing shade, the flying bridge forms a wonderful additional outdoor living/entertainment space in port or at anchor. It’s a great place to read, watch osprey or eagles soar, or simply boat watch or nap on a lazy afternoon.
The interior layout and finish are stunning, with details such as a varnished teak and holly cabin sole throughout.
The interior is finished in Herreshoff style, with bright white panel surfaces trimmed out in teak.
The owners’ cabin, head compartment, and galley are forward and down three steps from the main deckhouse level.
The main cabin is elegant and practical, finished in understated traditional sailing yacht style, with practical gloss white laminate surfaces accented by satin-varnished teak. It is light and bright, with large windows on the front and sides, plus smaller windows and a windowed door in the aft bulkhead leading to the cockpit.
The extended deckhouse provides a substantial amount of additional interior volume compared to other versions of the WILBUR 34.
This is a boat built with a crew of two in mind, but with space to accommodate up to five for overnight cruising.
Starting forward, the lower helm station is to starboard, with large raised permanent helm seating with armrest, footrest, and backrest. Vision in all directions is excellent, and the array of electronics, engine controls, and ancillary functions is ergonomically at hand.
The helmsman can reach the trim tabs, bow thruster, windlass controls, bilge pump panel, electric signal horn, and virtually every other function required to run the boat without moving from the steering station.
Beneath the helm seat there is voluminous storage, plus access to the starboard side engine room hatch.
Three large centerline hatches in the cabin sole allow complete access to the machinery space below for inspection and service.
Opposite the helm area to port, companion seating gives equal consideration to a second crew member. The companion seat duplicates the helm seat in comfort and function, with a built-in chart table for Chartkits and an adjustable eye-level mounting bracket for an iPAD or other tablet running navigation software.
There is a bracket-mounted WEEMS & PLATH barometer on the overhead above the chart table.
Aft of the companion seat to port is a long built-in settee that pulls out to form a snug double berth for occasional overnight guests.
Aft of this settee, there is an under-counter cabinet for additional storage. Mounted on an adjustable bracket above this cabinet is a 22” high-def flatscreen SAMSUNG TV. A SAMSUNG Blu-ray disc player, with USB port for a separate hard disk, lets you watch your movie or Brit Box favorites on a rainy night if you feel inclined.
There is extensive storage under this settee, accessed by hinged door panels. Another removable panel gives access to the port engine room hatch.
On the starboard side aft of the helm set, there is a diner-style dining area with a table that drops down to form an additional large single berth when needed.
Downeast-style boats are known for large expanses of deckhouse glass to maximize light and visibility. CALYPSO has varnished wood custom LEVELOR blinds on the side and aft deckhouse windows for complete privacy. During the day, these may be raised, lowered, or opened to control light, or they may be completely shut at night for privacy. When underway, these blinds are raised and stored in custom teak valences above the windows.
Lighting throughout the interior of the boat is warm white LED, dramatically reducing electrical consumption.
CALYPSO's interior is an excellent balance of comfort and functionality. Snugged down in a protected anchorage, you will feel comfortably at home in your own little corner of paradise, warm, dry, and secure.
The L-shaped galley features an open bulkhead to the main salon thereby keeping the cook "in the conversation" going on at the helm and salon. Galley is to port, opposite the head compartment. The galley has a fully-rebuilt three-burner stainless steel PRINCESS propane range with oven, a deep-sized stainless steel sink, stainless steel microwave oven (2021) on a custom shelf, ZOJIRUSHI coffeemaker, compact CUISNART food processor, and an under-counter NORCOLD refrigerator with freezer compartment.
There is well-organized storage throughout the galley, both under-cabinet and outboard of the counters. (High quality crockery and glassware by WILLIAMS-SONOMA, GORHAM stainless steel flatware. (ALL-CLAD cookware are available by separately).
The main electrical panel is located on the starboardbulkhead next to the steps leading from the lower level to the main living level.
Aft of the forward cabin, there is a comfortable head compartment to starboard, including a separate shower stall with curtain, built-in fiberglass seat, and bracket-mounted shower head.
In the main part of the head, there is stainless steel sink and a full-size VACUFLUSH toilet with holding tank watch system. There are several lockers under the sink counter.
Ventilation is provided by two stainless steel ports plus a solar-powered exhaust vent.
The head and shower compartments are separated from the rest of the lower deck by a solid teak door.
Unusual for the Wilbur 34, the owner’s cabin forward is separated from the rest of the boat by a full bulkhead and solid teak door for privacy.
This cabin has a v-berth that converts to a large double with the berth insert in place. The hull sides are lined with varnished wood strakes. There is a teak shelf over each berth, a bureau aft to port with four drawers and a locker under, a hanging locker to starboard, and large storage lockers under each berth.
Custom linens and a custom duvet with zip-out fleece lining for the owners’ berth are included.
Ventilation and light are provided by two stainless steel ports and a large overhead opening hatch.
As part of a major 2023 upgrade project, Billings Diesel and Marine re-powered CALYPSO, re-engineering the entire engine installation and installing a commercially-rated CATERPILLAR C 7.1 engine producing 425 hp at 2700 RPM. This project included, in part, rebuilding and reinforcing the engine beds, installing new inner cutless bearing, new PYI shaft seal, new custom exhaust riser, elbow, and exhaust insulation, re-aligning the entire drive train, new high-amperage wiring, new 175 amp alternator, digital engine displays at lower and upper helm, and numerous other improvements.
The C 7.1 (not to be confused with the older C 7, a totally different engine) is a modern common-rail, electronically controlled EPA Tier 3/IMO II engine. This commercial version of the engine is typically used in fishing boats and other commercial applications that are operating 1000-3000 hours per year.
The engine features gear-driven rather than belt-driven water pumps for reliability and low maintenance. It also features a self-bleeding fuel system and zinc-free cooling system.
As of June 1, 2026, the engine hour meter shows 89 hours of use. It is essentially a brand-new engine that should last the life of the boat. It is fuel-efficient, quiet, smooth-running, clean, powerful, and easy to service.
Power is delivered by a five-blade HY-TORQ NiBrAl prop 24” in diameter, currently pitched at 22” to accommodate the lower output. The new C 7.1 could still easily reach rated RPM if this prop were re-pitched to its original 23”, which would give an additional knot of speed at the top end if desired. As it is, at sea trials of the new engine in 2023, the boat topped out at 17 knots with a full load of fuel and water, the dinghy with outboard on the davits, and three crew aboard.
Remote RACOR filters for both the main engine and generator are readily accessible from the lazarette hatch.
Economical cruising speed is 9 kt while consuming ½ gallon per mile, giving a range of about 360 miles with a 20% reserve. Fast cruise at 15 knots consumes 1 gallon per mile. Top speed as currently propped is 17 kt at full load.
GENERATOR
The generator is a 5 kw NEXT-GEN UCM2 5.5, powered by a reliable two-cylinder KUBOTA diesel engine. As of June 1, 2026, the hour meter shows 1850 operating hours. It is generally used for battery charging at anchor and typically operates about 100 hours per year.
It is easily accessible for service and fluid checking. (Both the main engine and the generator use the same ROTELLA engine oil.)
BOW THRUSTER
The bow thruster is a SIDEPOWER SP 75T, installed in 2007. This is a twin-prop unit producing a lot of thrust in a compact package.
It has its own dedicated group 31 AGM battery (new 2025) and charging system adjacent to the thruster, reducing cabling requirements.
The thruster is operated from both the upper or lower helm stations.
TRIM TABS
The boat is equipped with a large BENNETT trim tab system to level the ride and increase efficiency at higher speeds. These can be actuated from either helm station.
ALL THE FOLLOWING NEW IN 2025 unless otherwise noted.

SIMRAD-ROBERTSON AP 300 autopilot system operable from lower helm or flying bridge stations. This is an older system that works perfectly.
The 2023 electrical and mechanical upgrade included major improvements to the DC electrical system, including BLUE SEA Systems remote electrical battery switching with control panel adjacent to the main electrical panel. This allows instant paralleling of batteries for engine starting in an emergency. The remote switches also feature manual override capabilities in an emergency.
As part of the same project, most of the high-amperage DC wiring was either replaced, re-routed, or simplified, with new wiring to current ABYC standards.
The project also included cleaning up or replacing large portions of the lower-amperage DC system, including the bonding and grounding systems. All this work was done to current ABYC standards.
The two AGM 8D house batteries and the two smaller group 27 AGM engine and generator starting batteries were replaced in 2023.
A XANTREX SW 2012 2kw true sine wave inverter/charger powers sensitive AC equipment when needed, and includes a 100 amp smart charger with remote control panel and battery monitoring.
There are two 30-amp shore power inlets, but the primary shore power functions are supported by a single 30-amp inlet. The second inlet carries higher-amperage systems such as the air conditioning. The boat comes with multiple shore power cables and adaptors for various shore power connections.
HEATING and COOLING
CALYPSO is well equipped with two MARINE-AIR reverse cycle water-cooled air conditioners.
There are air conditioning outlets throughout.
In 2022, a WEBASTO Air Top EVO 40 diesel-fired central forced-air heating system was installed. This 4KW/13,650 BTU system has outlets in the main deckhouse and lower deck, and extends the cruising season from spring into late fall in a northern climate. It is quiet and efficient, and is controlled by a digital thermostat.
PLUMBING
Pressure fresh water is provided by a FLOJET 2840 water pressure system. There is a spare pressure pump and assorted other spares.
The six-gallon water heater was replaced in 2018, and heats water either electrically using the generator or shore power, or via a calorifier off the main engine when running.
The sanitation system consists of a fresh-water VACUFLUSH 506 full-size toilet (new in 2021) with remote vacuum pump and vacuum tank (new 2023). The VACUFLUSH features hands-free user-friendly operation.
There is an integral fiberglass holding tank of about 20 gallons capacity. In addition to the normal deck pump-out, the holding tank system has a macerator pump and overboard discharge capabilities for offshore use when permitted or necessary.
Primary ground tackle is a 35-pound LEWMAR Delta anchor on 225’ of 5/16” G4 hi-tensile chain, new in 2014. The anchor self-stows under the bowsprit.
Secondary anchor is DANFORTH 20 Hi Tensile on 25’ of 5/16” G4 chain plus rope rode.
Windlass is a horizontal LOFRANS Tigres with 1000 watt motor, operated from the lower helm station, flying bridge, or by foot switches at the bow.
MANTUS chain hook and heavy bridle.
Salt water anchor wash-down spigot at bow.
CALYPSO comes with a 9’ AB aluminum-hull RIB equipped with a 4-stroke 8hp TOHATSU outboard, both new in 2014 and in good condition. The dinghy is carried on custom stern davits built by NAUTILUS Engineering.
