Wellcraft 35: BoatTEST Review

Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The Wellcraft 355 is a versatile performance adventure boat that seamlessly blends commuter functionality with family-friendly features. Designed to deliver power, excitement, stability, and comfort, this 36-foot cruiser offers a well-thought-out layout and robust construction, making it suitable for a variety of boating activities.

Exterior Design and Cockpit

The cockpit of the Wellcraft 355 measures three feet 11 inches from the sport tow bar to the front and spans 9 feet 3 inches side to side. It features stainless steel boarding gates on both sides leading to swim platforms, complemented by removable boarding ladders. Nine-inch pull-up cleats are strategically placed, with sockets nearby for stanchions to support sunshades. The cockpit includes two macerated fish boxes with perimeter drains, and optional teak decking enhances the warmth and aesthetics of the space. A cleverly designed fender storage rack is integrated, and optional bench seating or an outdoor galley with a sink, grill, live well, and cooler can be installed. A centrally located hatch provides access to mechanical components, while optional equipment includes a 6.4 kW diesel generator or a Seakeeper gyro stabilizer. The cockpit is well-lit with lighting on both sides and protected by heavy-duty rails, reflecting a slightly overbuilt design for durability.

Bow and Deck Features

The boat employs an asymmetrical layout, providing 18 inches of side deck space on the starboard side and slightly less on the port side, optimizing interior room. Bulwarks rise 32 inches, with rails topping out at 37 inches, exceeding ABYC standards. The bow features a three-across lounger measuring 63 by 52 inches with flip-down armrests and beverage holders. A center cushion flips up to reveal a hatch for below-deck light and additional beverage holders. Forward of this is a 24-inch bench seat with a teak pedestal table that can convert into a sunbed with storage underneath. Additional storage compartments accommodate propane bottles for grilling options. The bow is equipped with robust one-and-a-half-inch thick rails, a Lumar windlass with remote control, a recessed anchor roller for a 15-kilogram anchor, and optional bow reboarding ladders. Multiple cleats and pop-up LED lighting enhance functionality, while sockets for stanchions support sunshades. The windshield design features a pronounced brow to reduce sun glare and improve water shedding, inspired by traditional workboat styling.

Interior Living Spaces

The cabin offers a welcoming gathering area with a ceiling height of six feet three inches and includes a manually operated skylight with blackout shade. Elevated grab handles and overhead rails provide safety and convenience, especially offshore. Seating spans across with two optional removable stools that can be positioned around a high-low expandable table, which converts into a berth. Storage is abundant beneath the table and ottomans, with optional snap-in carpeting available. The galley, located to port, features a single-burner electric stove, stainless steel sink, storage drawers, a trash receptacle, refrigeration, and bottle and stemware storage. A microwave is installed under the observer seat. A control panel near the door manages battery switches for engines, house, and generator batteries, along with generator controls, breakers, and polarity indicators. Climate control includes 12,000 BTU air conditioning on deck and 8,000 BTU below deck, requiring 110-volt power.

Helm and Navigation

The helm area includes three high-rise bucket seats with flip bolsters, featuring intricate upholstery and custom embroidery. Ventilation is provided by an opening side window and air conditioning vents. The helm is double-wide, accommodating either single or dual 16-inch displays. The compass aligns with the operator's sightline, while the steering wheel is slightly offset to the left for ergonomic control. Controls include joystick throttle and shift, bow thruster, quick winch, electrical switches, beverage holders, and VHF radio, all arranged to avoid knee strike zones. A footrest with adjustable height and a platform that elevates the captain by seven and a half inches enhance comfort. The helm door opens pneumatically to a 25-inch width, allowing seamless blending of indoor and outdoor spaces.

Private Accommodations

Accessed via a 23-inch wide hatch on the port side, the cabin's private accommodations include a forward berth measuring 67 by 60 inches, extendable to 73 inches with a six-inch foot extension. Headroom is six feet two inches, with ample natural light from multiple windows equipped with blinds or blackout shades. Storage is plentiful, including overhead compartments, a hanging locker, and under-berth space. A small settee to port offers a comfortable seating area, complemented by a mirror and a 29-inch swivel-mounted TV at the aft bulkhead. The full head features Corian counters, a vessel sink, mirror storage, and a walk-in shower with ventilation through opening port lights. Circuit breakers and step lighting are integrated beneath the shower step, enhancing functionality and ambiance.

Construction and Hardtop Design

The Wellcraft 355 utilizes a proprietary hull construction technique called 'infjection,' combining infusion and injection methods to create a strong, sturdy hull. The hardtop design appears inverted, providing a continuous grab rail around its perimeter and integrated rain gutters that channel water away from the sides, ensuring dryness even in heavy rain. Standard rails encircle the boat, with optional cross rails available for added security.

Power and Performance

Power options for the Wellcraft 355 include triple outboard engines, either 300-horsepower Mercury or Yamaha units, or 350-horsepower Mercury Verados. Although rough ocean conditions prevented traditional performance testing, Wellcraft's extensive data indicates a top speed of 57.7 miles per hour with triple 300-horsepower Mercury Verados. Best cruise speed is 35 miles per hour at 4,000 RPM, achieving approximately one mile per gallon fuel efficiency and a range of 238 statute miles with a 10% fuel reserve from the 264-gallon total capacity. The boat demonstrated excellent handling in rough seas, maintaining stability and dryness while airborne over waves and pressing through troughs with confidence. The off-center steering wheel enhances ergonomic control, making the helm responsive and comfortable during demanding conditions.

Conclusion

The Wellcraft 355 stands as a testament to the brand's commitment to power, adventure, and stability. Its thoughtful design, robust construction, and versatile features make it suitable for high-performance boating, family outings, and commuter use alike. The boat's combination of comfort, functionality, and seaworthiness ensures an engaging and reliable experience on the water.
