Wellcraft 22: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Wellcraft 222 is designed as an entry-level center console boat that offers extensive customization options. It combines family-friendly features in the bow area with fishing-oriented amenities in the stern, making it a versatile vessel suitable for a range of recreational activities.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The boat's exterior is distinguished by the Wellcraft hook symbol molded into the topsides, adding a signature aesthetic touch. The transom features swim platforms on both sides with a central service platform, complemented by a four-step reboarding ladder on the port side that includes easy-to-grip handles extending to the deck. The cockpit measures six feet, six inches fore and aft and two feet wide, with a double-wide bench seat that stows against the transom when not in use. Padded bolsters wrap nearly 360 degrees around the cockpit, excluding the aft gate and the port side livewell. Rod storage is ample, with four rod holders across the stern, two on each cap rail, and four rocket launcher-style holders on the leaning post, totaling twelve. The livewell is gasketed with a clear hatch and rounded blue interior corners. Under-gunnel rod storage accommodates rods up to nine feet long, and additional vertical rod holders flank the console. A raw water washdown is located on the starboard side at the stern.

Bow and Console Features

The bow area emphasizes family comfort with cushioned aft-facing seats that can be converted to forward-facing with removable backrests. A cocktail table can be added to enhance the social atmosphere, and a filler cushion transforms the space into a sun pad. Storage is available beneath the bench seats and within the deck. A forward-facing seat is positioned just ahead of the console. The console itself features a unique storage compartment that opens vertically, providing a wide entry point but slightly interrupting forward visibility from the helm. An electrical panel with a battery switch is located on the port side, with unsnappable storage pockets on both sides allowing access behind the panel. The console also houses vertical rod holders that drain into the bilge and offers twin battery compartments flanking a standard porta-potty.

Operational and Helm Details

Operational features include an anchor roller at the bow, a dedicated cleat for securing the anchor rode, and a hatch for road access. Two pull-up cleats are positioned on each side of the boat. Engine options range from 150 to 250 horsepower outboards, with choices among Evinrude, Mercury, or Yamaha. The helm is equipped with an all-black panel behind the white console, featuring lighted rocker switches, a Yamaha multifunction display, and a 10-inch Garmin display. A VHF radio is mounted just ahead of the helm. The stainless steel steering wheel is mounted on a tilt base and includes a steering knob. Both steering and engine controls are mechanical, providing direct feedback. The observer benefits from a dedicated grab handle on the starboard side and dual footrests for comfort while standing or sitting. The double-wide bench seat at the helm is fixed, with storage beneath the cushion.

Power and Performance

The Wellcraft 222 Fisherman measures 22 feet in length overall, with a beam of 8 feet 6 inches and a draft of 34 inches. The boat's empty weight is 3,400 pounds, and the test weight with full fuel and two people aboard was approximately 4,438 pounds. Powered by a single Yamaha 250 horsepower outboard with a 16T by 15.5 propeller, the boat achieved a top speed of 48.4 mph at 6,000 rpm. The most economical cruise was recorded at 3,000 rpm and 23 mph, consuming 6.3 gallons per hour and yielding a range of 341 statute miles while maintaining a 10% fuel reserve from the 103-gallon total capacity. The boat planes quickly, reaching planing mode in under three seconds and accelerating to 20 mph in 5.6 seconds and 30 mph in 7.8 seconds. The bow rises approximately 12.5 degrees during acceleration without obstructing forward visibility. Although tested in calm conditions, the boat demonstrated agile handling with good tracking during S-turns and no prop ventilation during performance turns. Trim tabs are optional and not recessed into the transom; they were not necessary during testing.

Conclusion

The Wellcraft 222 offers an impressive combination of affordability, versatility, and handling performance. Its thoughtful design balances family comfort and fishing functionality, while its powertrain options and handling characteristics make it a responsive and enjoyable boat to operate. Overall, it stands out as a well-rounded entry-level center console suitable for a variety of boating activities.
