Wellcraft 182 Fisherman: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Wellcraft 182 Fisherman is an 18-foot center console boat positioned in the low price point category. Among its peers, it stands out as one of the heaviest boats, indicating a robust build with more material used compared to competitors. This weight contributes to its higher passenger capacity and enhanced safety features. The boat is designed for anglers and recreational users seeking a sturdy, versatile vessel with ample storage and thoughtful design elements.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

Starting at the stern, the Wellcraft 182F features a three-step reboarding ladder extending 22 inches below the waterline, meeting ABYC standards. The stern area serves as a functional casting platform with flip-up jump seats on both sides, each equipped with beverage holders that double as rod holders. Grab handles and a helm seat with a flip-backrest provide comfort and support, while underneath the helm seat, brackets secure a 72-quart cooler. Rod storage is conveniently located underground on both sides. The side decks offer 16 inches of space between the bulwarks and hardtop supports, facilitating easy movement forward. The bow area includes padded decking that can be removed to reveal a non-skid casting platform elevated 15 inches above the main deck, with a glass-backed live well integrated into the design. Six-inch pull-up cleats are positioned port and starboard on the foredeck, along with a hatch covering a deep anchor locker. A forward-facing seat is located at the front of the console, enhancing comfort and utility.

Console and Helm Features

The console design departs from the typical side-door approach by incorporating a front-lifting door, providing superior access to the interior space which houses a Dometic port-a-potty. The rear of the console is covered with canvas secured by snaps, protecting electronics and mechanical components, though the horizontal snap arrangement can occasionally loosen in rough conditions. The door is supported by struts and features a grab handle for ease of use. The helm area includes an acrylic windshield, although some distortion is noted at the corners. A centrally mounted compass is slightly offset from the helm line. The helm panel is outfitted with white back-lit gauges and switches, a horn, and ample space for multifunction displays and additional equipment, though raised edges would be beneficial to prevent items from sliding off. The stainless steel steering wheel is equipped with a knob and mounted on a tilt base, complemented by Yamaha ignition and shift controls. Additional amenities include two drink holders and a Fusion stereo system with connectivity options. The helm is protected by a sturdy T-top with heavy-duty 2 3/4-inch framework and removable canvas, allowing for storage flexibility.

Safety and Capacity

A notable feature of the Wellcraft 182F is its high freeboard, measuring 34 inches at the bow, 33 inches at midship, and 27 inches at the stern. This design enhances safety by providing a drier cockpit environment and greater security for children and anglers in rough conditions. The increased freeboard also translates to higher weight-carrying capacity, with the boat rated by the U.S. Coast Guard to carry eight passengers—more than any competitor in its class. The Wellcraft 182F can carry 600 pounds, which is 42% more than one competitor and 350 pounds more than another, underscoring its robust construction and practical design.

Power and Performance

Although the test team experienced technical difficulties during fuel flow measurements, factory data indicates that the Wellcraft 182F powered by a 150-horsepower Yamaha four-stroke engine achieves a top speed of 44 miles per hour. The optimal cruising speed is reported at 27 miles per hour at 4,000 RPM, with a fuel consumption of six gallons per hour, yielding approximately 4.5 miles per gallon and a range of 227 miles. This range is likely superior to other boats in its class due to its larger fuel capacity, which can be 5% to 51% greater. The boat exhibits a 60-degree bow rise upon acceleration and offers quick, sporty handling with firm Seastar hydraulic steering. It maintains a comfortable grip through turns with slight chine walk at full lock and minor prop ventilation when trimmed fully down. The Wellcraft 182F’s 19-degree transom dead rise—the deepest in its class—contributes to a smoother ride and better handling in choppy conditions, as demonstrated by its clean passage through wake with minimal pounding and rapid recovery.

Additional Features and Conclusion

The Wellcraft 182F is available in ten color schemes and includes a custom-made single-axle trailer treated with gatorhide protectant, enhancing durability and ease of transport. Its combination of high freeboard, substantial weight capacity, and thoughtful design elements make it a compelling choice for anglers and recreational boaters seeking a safe, comfortable, and fun-to-drive vessel. Overall, the Wellcraft 182F delivers a well-rounded package with strong performance, practical features, and a solid build quality.
