" Bella Luna" is a lovely vessel. Not only does her exterior stand out as you approach her but her interior will wrap you in warmth. The exceptional teak cabinetry is beautiful and gives one that old world charm of a by gone era. She is a serious world cruiser but not too much boat to handle. Not many boats come close to the craftmanship in Bella Luna unless you are looking at far more expensive yachts. This is all the boat that one will ever need and she will keep you safe in the roughest of conditions.
Originally conceived in the early 1970's by the founder of Hans Christian Yachts, John Edwards, a design was commissioned from Bob Perry for a thirty-four footer to be built at the Union Ship Co. in Taipei, and marketed in the States as the "Hans Christian 34". Edwards then wanted to stretch it to a 36 footer and had the yard build a second set of molds and some 10-12 were built. Edwards later had a falling out with the Union Ship Co. and went to another Taiwan yard. When he tried to move the molds, Union told him they held the ownership of the molds and would continue to build the boat and market it themselves as the Union 36.
The Union Ship Co. built a few 36's before changing their name to Union Yacht Co. and entering into various distributor arrangements on the West coast where the boat was marketed under names chosen by the importer. HC 36's can be identified by a hull number beginning with XSA and Union 36's with a hull number of USC or UYC. It is believed that approximately 160 36's were built after the exit of Edwards, with the last boats being sold in late 1987 and early '88. Some other names they were marketed under were; Hans Christian 36, Mariner Polaris 36, EO 36 and Union 36, but they were all the same boat.
The Union 36, Inspired by a Robert Perry design, combines the elegance and gracefulness of a classic Bluewater double-ender with the interior luxury demanded by the cruising sailor. With the look of a Tayana 37', the Union 36' has found a receptive market among many knowledgeable sailors who recognize genuine offshore cruising capabilities. Her decks and well designed topsides make her as enjoyable to sail as she is to own; she is truly a proud little ship.
Built by Union Shipyards in Taipae, Taiwan, the Union 36 is known by discriminating sailors, as a cutter rigged, fiberglass hull, full keel, canoe stern, heavily built yacht, with glass decks, and teak trim. She is capable of world cruising and with volumes of storage and tankage the boat can be equipped with clothing and food for extended cruises. The solid teak staving interior throughout, makes the boat warm and inviting.
The Union 36 cutter is a well proven design that can be cruised with confidence and comfort, whether going out short handed or with the family, the Union 36 is a design proven dependable by over twenty years of plying the seas in all weather.
The Union 36 was designed with 2 interior configurations. Each Union 36 is custom handcrafted in solid teak. Only the finest teak available is selected for use in this well-appointed interior. All teak surfaces are finished with several coats of satin and gloss finish varnish. Her interior layout features plenty of hanging lockers, drawers and cabinets to store enough gear for living aboard or extended cruising. In addition, she has spacious berths for 6, a U-shaped Sea Galley, a huge chart table, and hot and cold pressure water.
Starting forward is the Master Stateroom a V-berth with filler makes for a nice double berth. Outboard are lovely solid teak cabinets that surround the berth as well as teak ceiling strips that line the hull sides, wrapping one in the warmth of the teak. Moving aft is the head to port with vanity, toilet and shower with cabinets outboard for storage, opening portlight for ventilation and the ability to use the space centerline for more room to shower. Opposite to starboard is a well ventilated hanging locker.
Next we move into the Salon; here she has a large U-shaped dinette to port with a table that drops down to create a double berth. Outboard one will find more solid teak cabinets. To starboard is a straight settee also with cabinets outboard. All the cushions and fabric has been updated by the present owner with red ultra-suede and white piping. Teak and holly sole throughout the vessel. White bead board on the ceiling held with varnished teak strips. A large traditional Butterfly Hatch offers plenty of light and ventilation along with all the bronze opening portlights.
Aft of the salon and still apart of it, is the U-shaped Sea Galley to port. This galley offers all that one would need for extended cruising. Opposite the galley to starboard is a stand-up navigation station, wet locker and large quarter berth. Additional cabinet, some electronics, electric panel and parallel switch can all be found in this area. Centerline steps lead to her cockpit and are removable to gain access to the engine compartment as well as an additional electric panel above.
When entering the cockpit one will find High coamings that are ringed in teak and will keep the cockpit dry and protected from breaking seas. She has a reverse steering wheel with Worm-gear controls that is virtually bullet proof. She has Bronze hardware that is super-sized and heavy duty as well as high bulwarks which add to the security on deck.
She has a U-shaped Sea Galley which is safe while under way. Light colored Corian counters contrast nicely with the rich varnished teak cabinets. Storage is abundant with both upper and lower cabinets. Solar vent above and opening portlight offer excellent ventilation as well.
