Tiara 48 LS: BoatTEST Review
Overview
In early February 2021, Mercury Marine collaborated with six boatbuilders to launch large boats powered by the new Mercury Verado 12V 7.6 liter 600 horsepower engine. Among these was the all-new Tierra 48LS, a vessel designed specifically to be powered by three of Mercury's 600 horsepower outboards. The Tierra 48LS was developed through a year and a half partnership between Mercury and Tierra founder Leon Slickers, aiming to meet demands for speed, fuel economy, and ease of operation. The boat serves as a guest-friendly day boat with comfortable seating, a three-person helm deck that can be fully enclosed, and two staterooms below for extended cruising.
Exterior Design and Deck Layout
The Tierra 48LS measures 48 feet 4 inches in length overall with a beam of 14 feet 2 inches and a dry weight of 25,000 pounds. It carries 660 gallons of fuel. The deck plan is asymmetrical forward of midships, featuring a deep, secure side deck to starboard and a raised deck to port that provides additional interior space and facilitates docking or rafting. Forward seating includes a nearly circular table area accommodating six to eight guests, which remains dry even in offshore chop conditions at speeds up to 35 knots. The center console helm seats four across and can be enclosed with electrically actuated sliding side doors and a roll-down Isinglass curtain aft, providing climate control options.
Interior Living Spaces
Surrounding the helm is a large U-shaped galley equipped with a grill, sink, refrigerator, ice maker, and ample counter space for food preparation. This area also serves as a vantage point for guests to observe forward activity when the bridge is fully occupied. Aft of the helm is the primary entertaining space, ideal for alfresco dining when anchored. Below deck, the Tierra 48LS offers two staterooms with a single head featuring a private shower stall and hanging lockers, supporting comfortable weekending or cruising.
Power and Performance
The Tierra 48LS is powered by three Mercury Verado 12V 7.6 liter 600 horsepower outboards. During a sea trial in choppy offshore conditions, the boat maintained a comfortable speed of 37 miles per hour. Notably, the engines feature a unique design where the lower units can pivot up to 45 degrees to port or starboard while the engines themselves remain stationary, enhancing maneuverability beyond conventional outboards. Mercury's test data, using a test weight of 32,200 pounds and dual propellers sized 31 inches on the outer engines and 27.5 inches on the inner engine, recorded a top speed of 60.1 miles per hour at 6,402 RPM. The optimal cruising speed was 34.6 miles per hour at 4,000 RPM, providing a range of approximately 394 statute miles (342 nautical miles).
Conclusion
The Tierra 48LS represents a significant collaboration between Mercury Marine and Tierra, resulting in a large outboard-powered vessel that balances speed, comfort, and functionality. Its innovative design features, such as the asymmetrical deck layout and pivoting lower units on the engines, contribute to both guest comfort and operational ease. While BoatTest.com has yet to conduct a full independent evaluation, Mercury's performance data and the initial sea trial with experienced captain Leon Slickers indicate a promising addition to the large outboard boat market.
