1988 Tartan 34-2 - Scheel Keel
Classic Sparkman & Stephens Design • Shoal Draft • Legendary Tartan Quality
The 1988 Tartan 34-2 is widely regarded as one of the finest cruising sailboats in her class. Designed by the renowned Sparkman & Stephens and built by Tartan Yachts, the 34-2 has earned an outstanding reputation for her exceptional sailing performance, solid construction, and beautifully crafted teak interior.
This example features the highly sought-after Scheel keel, providing a shallow 4'5½" draft while maintaining the impressive performance and stability that has made the Tartan 34-2 a favorite among experienced sailors. Whether you're cruising Long Island Sound, exploring the Chesapeake Bay, navigating the Intracoastal Waterway, or anchoring in secluded coves throughout New England, the Scheel keel opens up destinations unavailable to deeper-draft boats.
The unique Scheel keel design develops additional lift and excellent directional stability, resulting in responsive handling, confident upwind performance, and a comfortable motion underway. Combined with her substantial 40% ballast-to-displacement ratio, the Tartan inspires confidence in a wide range of sailing conditions while remaining equally at home during relaxed weekend cruising or competitive club racing.
Below deck, you'll find the warm craftsmanship that defines every classic Tartan. Rich teak joinery, abundant natural light, generous storage, and a practical cruising layout create an inviting interior capable of accommodating family cruising or extended coastal adventures. Every detail reflects the quality and attention to craftsmanship that has made Tartan one of America's most respected yacht builders.
Powered by a dependable Yanmar 3GM 27 HP diesel engine, docking, maneuvering, and motoring in calm conditions are handled with confidence and reliability.
The Tartan 34-2 continues to be one of the most respected midsize cruising sailboats ever built. Her combination of classic lines, exceptional sailing performance, shoal-draft capability, and timeless craftsmanship make her equally appealing to first-time Tartan owners and seasoned sailors alike.
If you're searching for a well-built American cruising yacht that delivers confidence under sail, comfort at anchor, and the versatility to explore waters beyond the reach of deeper-draft vessels, this 1988 Tartan 34-2 deserves your attention.
