Tim Jacket first designed the Tartan 31 in 1987 and later upgraded the design to the Piper in 1992. The Piper included a sail-a-way package to include a revised interior, North Sails, electronics, and lazy jacks to name a few, plus a revised keel. Otherwise the hull & rig didn't change. She has a double-spreader masthead rig which offers plenty of power and speed without over powering the boat. The keel is a "Beaver Tail" which differs in shape from the original T-31 Scheel keel providing greater lift with a slight flattened endplate bulb effecting in reduced drag. The righting moment is unchanged. Her rudder is a spade. The hull is solid fiberglass with a vinylester topcoat to prevent blisters. She has awesome good looks and functions well out on blue water. Tartan has a reputation for solid construction and good workmanship. Her self-bailing cockpit is T-shaped to accommodate the large destroyer wheel with a comfortable, slightly raised helm seat for a better view. Tartan emphasized performance in her cruising designs and a very nice teak interior with two door forward for entry into the head or the forward cabin. Teak and Holly sole. The nav station is L-shaped against a partial bulkhead with a swing-out seat at the 7'x5'quarter berth (but not blocking the quarter berth like the original T-31). The port settee is 6'6" long and the starboard is 5'6" suitable more for a child. The forward V-berths are 6'9" and 6'6". Headroom in the main salon is 6'2" and 6' in the forward cabin. A center-mounted table stows against the bulkhead, but it is not currently installed. Access to the engine is phenomenal on all sides after the stairway is easily removed. Nine opening ports in the main salon and quarter berth, plus the mid-cabin and foredeck provide light and ventilation. Storage on a Piper is expansive. There is a lazerette locker opening behind the helm and a portside sail locker. The Tartan 31 Piper is a solid, comfortable, moderately displaced, mid-range cruiser suitable for coastal cruising. Engine has received annual maintenance.
