Targa 32: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The 2024 Targa 32 is a thoughtfully designed yacht that emphasizes both functionality and comfort for extended cruising and exploration. This model features numerous options and upgrades tailored to enhance the boating experience, including an extended swim platform, advanced docking systems, and substantial storage solutions. The design reflects a focus on safety, convenience, and versatility, suitable for a variety of boating activities.

Exterior Design and Deck Features

Starting aft, the yacht boasts a large extended swim platform with flex teak decking accented by white lines, providing an elegant and durable surface. This platform is designed to carry a tender with optional davits, essential for exploring remote locations. A hatch on the swim platform offers easy access to the stern drives, allowing quick propeller maintenance without diving. The cockpit area features aft-focused seating arrangements that provide excellent views and comfort, complemented by amenities such as hot and cold showers, speakers, and ample storage lockers. Safety is enhanced by substantial gates and high-quality teak handrails. The vessel includes a joystick docking station on the port side with excellent visibility, facilitating precise maneuvering. Both port and starboard sides have boarding gates with powder-coated black hardware for durability and aesthetic appeal. A convenient ladder allows easy access to the hard top for loading water toys like kayaks and paddleboards. Side decks are spacious and secure, providing safe movement around the boat, especially beneficial when children or pets are onboard. The bow area offers a comfortable seating lounge with a sliding table for alfresco dining, propane bottle storage for the onboard cooktop, and an additional large refrigerator. The anchoring system is thoughtfully positioned with a bow rail and a flip-out step to assist with beaching. Nighttime operation is supported by strategically placed dimmable lights, a powerful deck spotlight, and navigation lighting integrated into the hard top.

Interior Living Spaces

Accessed through an aft door, the pilot house features three entrances for excellent flow and convenience. The interior is finished with solid teak wood cabinetry and contemporary flush-mounted drawer faces, complemented by Blue Seas soft-close hardware. The space is well-lit by large windows and a substantial Lumar skylight that opens to bring in natural light. The seating area is versatile, accommodating three people forward during navigation or converting into a U-shaped lounge for dining and socializing, with the helm chair swiveling to face the crew. The galley includes a dual burner propane cooktop, a sink with both fresh and saltwater options, and dedicated storage for cutlery and dishware, supporting comfortable extended stays onboard. Additional refrigeration is provided both in the pilot house and forward on the bow. The helm station is ergonomically designed with a shock-absorbing chair that adjusts for both seated and standing positions, ensuring comfort during long passages.

Power and Performance

The yacht is powered by twin Volvo Penta D6 380 horsepower engines, accessible via two large deck hatches that provide excellent top-side access for maintenance. The engine room is well-organized and clearly labeled, with crossovers for start batteries to ensure redundancy and reliability. The helm is equipped with a 16-inch Garmin touchscreen for navigation, joystick controls for docking, autopilot, bow thruster, and trim tabs with automatic adjustment. Additional features include windshield defrost systems, diesel heating, and engine-generated heat for cold weather operation. The vessel also incorporates dynamic positioning technology, allowing the boat to maintain position with the push of a button, enhancing safety and convenience during anchoring or stationary maneuvers.

Private Accommodations

Below deck, the midship accommodations include a double berth to port and a single berth to starboard, both spacious and comfortable with ample headroom and storage. The single berth resembles a pilot berth, suitable for adults or children, and doubles as additional storage space. The freshwater electric head features a generous amount of headroom, a shower with hot and cold water, a sink with storage behind the mirror, and a vent fan. The forward cabin offers a well-lit V-berth with solid headroom, reading lights, storage compartments, and diesel heater ducting for warmth. The space is enhanced by rope lighting and an electric fan, creating a cozy and inviting sleeping area.

Hard Top and Additional Features

The substantial hard top is accessible via a ladder and designed to support standing activities, including swimming and loading water toys. It is equipped with four 90-watt solar panels to support extended off-grid cruising by maintaining battery charge for refrigeration and lighting. Navigation and safety equipment mounted on the hard top include a 24-inch radar, GPS antenna, AIS, VHF antenna, high-quality horns, and elevated navigation lights. The hard top also houses a dynamic positioning antenna and multiple forward-facing lights, including a light bar, spotlights, and a joystick-operated manual spotlight, ensuring excellent visibility during nighttime operation.
