Tahoe 500 TS: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The Tahoe 500 TS bowrider is a versatile family boat designed to accommodate passengers comfortably while delivering sporty performance. It features a thoughtfully laid-out seating arrangement, ample storage, and a reliable V6 stern drive engine, making it suitable for both leisurely outings and water sports activities.

Exterior Design and Seating

The bow area of the 500 TS offers four-foot-long lounges with generous legroom, equipped with grab handles and conveniently placed cup holders beneath stereo speakers. The upholstery uses a three-tone color scheme with varied textures that enhance the boat's visual appeal. Access to the port bucket seat is facilitated by an open windshield, and this seat includes contoured backrests, swivel and fore-aft adjustment, a grab handle, and nearby controls such as a glove box with a 12-volt plug and MP3 input, along with a stereo remote. The back seating accommodates three passengers, featuring grab handles and speakers integrated into each bulwark. To ease access to the swim platform, the starboard section of the sun lounge folds over, and the bench seat bottom cushion slides out like a drawer, allowing passengers to step on fiberglass rather than upholstery. The engine hatch doubles as a sun lounge, capable of supporting an adult lying down or sitting upright to observe water activities. The swim platform includes wet storage on the port side and a four-step boarding ladder on the starboard side. Additional conveniences include cup holders at each corner, a ski tow eye on the transom, and a retractable stern light.

Storage and Engine Access

Storage is well distributed throughout the 500 TS. The anchor locker is located in the bow, with additional lockers beneath the side cushions. Removable backrests provide access to open console space and the electrical fuse block. The cockpit features a large 6-foot-6-inch by 1-foot-deep index storage locker suitable for boards and skis, equipped with a gas strut for ease of use; however, ventilation slots would improve air circulation. Behind the bucket seats, storage trays with bungee cords are installed in each gunwale, and there is space for a cooler under the center bench seat. Additional storage compartments are found beneath the starboard bottom cushion, under the port side cushion, and within a molded compartment in the walkway to the swim platform. The engine hatch is secured by two latches and opens to reveal the MerCruiser 4.3-liter engine with emission controls. The hatch underside is lined with sound-deadening foam to reduce engine noise, and partitions flank the engine for organization. The battery and trim pump are accessible to starboard, with open space to port. A port in the base of the engine hatch allows for fire extinguisher insertion in emergencies.

Helm and Controls

The helm of the 500 TS features a fixed steering wheel and gray-faced gauges designed to minimize glare. Warning lights for high temperature or low oil pressure are positioned on the right side of the panel for clear visibility. Centrally located are a small glove box and a bungee cord holder suitable for securing a cell phone. The shift throttle lever is ergonomically placed on the starboard gunwale, and the helm seat swivels and slides fore and aft for operator comfort. A bimini top is available to provide shade on hot days or shelter during brief showers.

Power and Performance

Powered by a 220-horsepower MerCruiser 4.3L MPI engine with an alpha drive, the Tahoe 500 TS achieved a top speed of 49.7 miles per hour at 4,600 rpm, consuming 17.5 gallons per hour, which translates to a range of approximately 85 miles at wide-open throttle. The most efficient cruising speed was recorded at 24.2 miles per hour at 2,500 rpm, burning 4.7 gallons per hour and yielding a range of 153 miles with a 10% fuel reserve. The V6 stern drive provides strong bottom-end torque, enabling the boat to plane in just 2.3 seconds, reach 20 mph in 5.6 seconds, and 30 mph in 8.3 seconds. The 19-foot-10-inch hull, tested with both outboard and stern drive configurations, demonstrated a smoother ride in choppy conditions when equipped with the heavier stern drive. The Powerglide II hull performed well in turns, maintaining a smooth and tenacious line through slalom passes and sweeping arcs.

Conclusion

The Tahoe 500 TS bowrider offers a well-rounded package for families seeking a boat with ample passenger space, generous storage, and capable performance. Its comfortable seating arrangements, practical storage solutions, and reliable V6 stern drive power make it suitable for both casual boating and water sports. The boat's handling and ride quality further enhance its appeal, positioning it as a strong contender for those entering the boating lifestyle.
