Sundeck 580: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The Sundeck Yachts 580 is a luxury yacht designed to accommodate an owner-operator along with a large family or numerous guests. It features a well-thought-out layout that balances operational functionality with comfort, making it suitable for extended stays on the water. The yacht measures 58 feet 1 inch in length overall, with a beam of 16 feet 5 inches and a draft of 3 feet 9 inches. Its empty weight is approximately 55,000 pounds, with a test weight of 58,575 pounds including fuel and passengers.

Crew Quarters and Operational Features

Although the 580 is owner-operator friendly, it includes dedicated crew quarters accessed via a watertight transom door. This space comprises two bunks, a single wet head with a pull-out sprayer, and a washer-dryer combination. A small refrigerator is conveniently located near the bunks. The head's entrance is adjacent to the main entry, and the step outside conceals the steering gear for easy inspection. The aft deck is equipped with heavy-duty 12-inch gear for line handling, warping winches for med mooring, and a starboard-side passerelle with controls nearby. Access to the engine room is through a hatch in the aft deck, which is finished underneath and supported by dual struts. The opening is designed with gutters to channel water overboard.

Engine Room and Mechanical Systems

The engine room houses twin FPT top-tier 570-horsepower engines coupled to straight shafts, with five feet, four inches of headroom for ease of access. All sides of the engines are accessible, with checkpoints such as fuel filters and C-strainers positioned conveniently. The fuel tanks are located fully forward and feature sight tubes for quick level checks. Between the tanks sits a SeaKeeper 6 gyro-stabilizer. To starboard, the air handler supports the Tropical Version 75,000 BTU air conditioning system, with the fresh water pump and water filtration system positioned above for city water. The yacht is powered by a 13.5 kW diesel generator and includes a standard 12.5 kVA 52-amp boost transformer. Electrical service lines are thoughtfully arranged, including an electric cord reel positioned out of the trip zone and multiple 30-amp service lines compliant with U.S. standards.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The yacht’s side decks provide a safe and comfortable passage with 20 inches of width between the cabin side and 32-inch high bulwarks, augmented by rails that bring the total height to 41 inches. Boarding doors are strategically placed, and overhead protection extends 15 inches. The raised foredeck features three 7-inch steps and maintains a rail height of 38 inches, exceeding standard safety requirements. The foredeck includes 10-inch midship cleats mounted on angled bases, and the ground tackle is concealed under flush hatches. Bulwarks rise 28 inches with rails topping out at 33 inches. The anchor windlass is mounted on a raised platform with a polished plow-style anchor and a stainless steel through-stem roller. The starboard hatch provides access to the road locker.

Bridge and Helm Stations

The flybridge helm is positioned on an elevated starboard platform and includes a compass atop the console, a 16-inch display flanked by tri-data displays, and well-organized switches grouped by function. Controls include bilge alarms, lighting, engine start-stops, rudder indicators, horn, windlass, maneuvering joystick, thruster controls, and engine controls. The helm features an 18-inch vertically mounted steering wheel and a fixed double-wide bench seat with storage underneath. A mast supports navigation and communication equipment including Raymarine HD radar, Wi-Fi, 4G antennas, digital TV, satellite antenna, and a FLIR night vision camera. The lower helm console, also starboard mounted, features dual 16-inch displays, grouped electrical switches, rudder indicator, autopilot, joystick, bow and stern thruster controls, engine controls, stereo, and an EZ-Dock system control pad. The leather-wrapped 18-inch wheel is vertically mounted, and the fixed bench seat includes a flip bolster and footrest. Visibility is excellent through a three-piece curved, zero-distortion windshield with marginal mullions and an extended brow that reduces glare and houses three wipers. A 23-by-63-inch side door provides quick access to the side deck, facilitating short-handed operation.

Performance and Handling

Powered by twin 570-horsepower FPT engines turning 25.6-inch diameter props up to 3,000 RPM, the 580 achieved a top speed of 23.8 knots during testing. The yacht exhibits a linear increase in range as speed decreases, with a notable jump at 1,300 RPM and 8.6 knots, where fuel consumption is 5.4 gallons per hour. This translates to 1.6 nautical miles per gallon and a range of 947 nautical miles while maintaining a 10 percent fuel reserve from the 660-gallon total capacity. The yacht rides approximately 5 degrees bow high at plane, allowing the hard chines forward to effectively reduce spray. At displacement speeds, the plumb bow slices through waves efficiently, enhancing comfort. The SeaKeeper 6 gyro stabilizer significantly reduces pitch and directional wandering, even in following seas. Maneuvering in tight marina spaces is precise and forgiving, aided by strong bow and stern thrusters and joystick controls, making the yacht highly manageable for operators of reasonable experience.

Conclusion

The Sundeck Yachts 580 is a well-balanced luxury yacht that combines ease of handling with upscale features and thoughtful design. Its operational spaces, including crew quarters, are versatile and can be adapted for various uses. The yacht’s mechanical systems, deck layout, and helm stations are designed for both comfort and functionality, supporting extended cruising and owner operation. Performance testing demonstrated strong control authority, efficient fuel consumption, and excellent sea manners, underscoring the yacht’s suitability for owners who desire a capable and refined vessel. Overall, the 580 stands out as an easily handled, well-appointed yacht that meets the demands of both family cruising and entertaining.
