Palm Beach 50: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Palm Beach 50 Flybridge is a luxury cruiser that combines elegant design with impressive handling and performance. Available in both express and flybridge configurations, this review focuses on the flybridge model. The vessel features meticulous craftsmanship with polished cleats, chafing gear, and a hull finished to perfection. Gloss-finished teak trim work enhances the yacht’s aesthetic appeal, reflecting the builder’s commitment to quality and style.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The exterior of the Palm Beach 50 Fly is thoughtfully designed for both aesthetics and functionality. The hull exhibits a gentle tumblehome, contributing to its sleek profile. Safety is prioritized with varying rail heights—from 15 inches along the walkways to 28 inches forward—augmented by sturdy tow rails. The bow area includes a horizontally mounted Muir windlass with a recessed polished anchor roller and a polished plow-style anchor. Fender and line storage is conveniently located behind the anchor locker, with teak flooring throughout the deck. Access to the bow is facilitated primarily via starboard steps, complemented by strategically placed grab handles and high side rails to ensure secure footing.

Engine Room and Mechanical Systems

Access to the engine room requires removal of salon cushions and operation of an electric lift hatch, a process noted as somewhat inconvenient. The engine start batteries are housed securely between the twin engines, with switches positioned on the aft bulkhead. The Palm Beach 50 Fly is powered by twin 435 horsepower Volvo Penta IPS 600 engines, located well forward under the cockpit sole and connected to pods via jack shafts. This layout prioritizes optimal weight distribution and handling over additional cabin space. The engine room provides easy access to oil dipsticks, fuel, oil, and water filters, though some areas are tight. External Raycor fuel water separators are conveniently positioned on the forward bulkhead. Additional mechanical components such as house batteries, battery management panel, charging system, and a 10kW Fischer-Panda generator are located in a separate forward compartment accessed through a hatch between forward-facing seats. The electrical panel is housed under the helm seat, and all hoses are properly double clamped, reflecting attention to detail in system installations.

Helm and Bridge Features

The lower helm station exemplifies a blend of elegance and functionality. It features a wood brow over a satin-finished wood panel, centered around a 17-inch Garmin multifunction display that integrates engine data. Analog gauges flank the main display, while controls for the remote spotlight, bow thruster, Volvo Penta system, ZipWake Interceptor tabs, windlass, and engine throttles are logically arranged within easy reach. The helm wheel combines wood and stainless steel on a tilt base, complemented by a freestanding compass and a white overhead light, though a red light option would enhance night operations. Visibility is excellent through large side and center windows, including an opening side window with a drip edge to channel rainwater effectively. Seating includes a double-wide bench with custom logo upholstery and storage beneath, alongside an elevated port bench for observers. The flybridge helm is centrally mounted with a carbon fiber dash housing similar instrumentation, including a 17-inch Garmin display, Volvo Penta controls, Fusion stereo, and ZipWake tabs. The flybridge helm seat is double-wide with flip bolsters and a footrest, designed for comfort and control.

Performance and Handling

The Palm Beach 50 Fly measures 54 feet overall with a beam of 14 feet 8 inches and a draft of 2 feet 10 inches. During testing with two people aboard and 60% fuel, the vessel weighed approximately 31,794 pounds. Powered by twin 435 horsepower Volvo Penta IPS 600 engines, the yacht achieved a top speed of 31.4 knots at 3550 RPM, consuming 44 gallons per hour and yielding a range of nearly 289 nautical miles with a 10% fuel reserve. The boat’s fuel efficiency improves linearly at reduced speeds, with a best economic cruise at 2200 RPM delivering 16.2 knots and a range exceeding 500 nautical miles. The vessel planes smoothly in 4.5 seconds, reaching 20 knots in 6.5 seconds and 30 knots in 10.9 seconds, maintaining a level attitude throughout acceleration. Trim tabs effectively lower the bow for improved performance and visibility without significant drag. The IPS propulsion system results in a wide turning radius, requiring speed reduction for tighter maneuvers. Offshore handling is exceptional; the yacht slices through 4 to 6-foot seas with minimal hull slap or pounding, maintaining dryness and comfort even at near top speeds. In beam and following seas, the boat exhibits a stable, level ride with no speed restrictions for comfort, demonstrating remarkable seaworthiness and control.

Soundproofing and Comfort

The engine compartment is well insulated with soundproofing materials, effectively reducing noise levels in the salon and helm areas to conversational levels during operation. The yacht’s layout supports comfortable day boating and entertaining, with spacious cockpit and salon areas designed for ease of use and social interaction. The thoughtful placement of controls and ergonomic seating further enhance the onboard experience.

Conclusion

The Palm Beach 50 Flybridge is a compelling combination of refined aesthetics, thoughtful engineering, and outstanding performance. Its elegant design is matched by superior handling characteristics, particularly in challenging sea conditions where it excels in comfort and control. While some minor access inconveniences exist, such as engine room entry, the overall layout prioritizes operational efficiency and safety. This yacht impresses not only with its beauty but also with its capability, making it a noteworthy choice for discerning cruisers seeking both style and substance.
