Palm Beach 70: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Palm Beach 70 is the newest flagship model in the Palm Beach Yachts lineup, embodying the brand's hallmark elegance, style, and superior fit and finish. As a semi-custom builder, Palm Beach offers highly personalized layouts tailored to individual client preferences. This particular model features a three-stateroom, three-head configuration with an additional crew cabin, although alternative layouts such as a single-cabin version have also been commissioned, emphasizing the yacht's versatility and focus on entertaining.

Exterior Design and Cockpit

Boarding the Palm Beach 70 is facilitated via a 4-foot 7-inch deep T-covered swim platform equipped with a removable staple rail that can be repositioned to clear the stern for tender access. The yacht features six-inch pop-up cleats on the quarters and a corded handheld remote to operate the tender garage, which comprises the entire aft section of the cockpit deck. This garage lifts the deck to bring a 10-foot rigid inflatable boat with a 20-horsepower engine into position for launch and recovery. Notably, the flagstaff must be removed before opening the garage to avoid contact with the bimini top. The expansive aft deck offers 115 square feet of usable space, including a 7-foot 4-inch bench seat behind a high-gloss solid wood table and an L-shaped settee with another matching table. Storage is integrated into the side bulwarks, deck compartments, and beneath the seating. A discreetly positioned service area with a stainless steel sink, stereo, ice maker, and refrigerator is tucked behind the flybridge ladder. Overhead, a stainless steel frame supports a canvas bimini attached to the trailing edge of the hardtop, providing shade 7 feet 8 inches above the deck. The yacht's high level of craftsmanship is evident in the gloss-finished wood trim and the detailed construction of deck hatches featuring solid injection molding, textured panels, stainless steel latches, and support struts.

Flybridge

Accessed via a ladder on the port side of the cockpit deck, the flybridge features an L-shaped seating area surrounding a high-gloss table with a high-low pedestal operated by a switch. The bulwarks rise to a comfortable 35 inches, and the hardtop provides a headroom of 6 feet 9 inches. The aft section offers open space suitable for deck chairs, although the pronounced crown of the deck may cause chairs to slide outward, suggesting a potential design adjustment to improve water runoff. A refreshment center is located beneath the antenna mast, equipped with a sink and an electric grill concealed by a lid with safety-designed cutouts. Below this area is storage space that can accommodate a refrigerator upon request. The entire flybridge is enclosed by 26-inch high rails for safety.

Bow and Outdoor Seating

At the bow, the yacht features a sun pad on the trunk cabin and a recessed seating area fully forward, which offers excellent views and is likely to be a favored spot. Access to this area is somewhat awkward due to the absence of steps or rails, requiring stepping onto the cushions, but once seated, the space provides a comfortable vantage point.

Interior Living Spaces

Entry to the interior is through a center-mounted door and up two steps into a salon flooded with natural light from large side windows. To port, an L-shaped sofa wraps around a solid wood, high-gloss high-low table that slides diagonally to facilitate movement behind it. The salon ceiling is upholstered and trimmed with satin-finished wood, illuminated by LED lighting. Opposite the port seating is another L-shaped sofa paired with a freestanding chair. A wine chiller is positioned forward, adjacent to a cabinet concealing a 48-inch flat-screen TV, with etched Palm Beach logo glassware stored nearby. A serving area with two stools is located forward to port, behind the galley. Electrically operated windows aft and forward can be lowered to create a convertible atmosphere and enhance ventilation during cooking. The U-shaped galley offers ample counter space, a Miele induction cooktop, a sink, a corner trash receptacle, a convection oven, refrigerator and freezer drawers, a dishwasher, and a serving area above the counters. Although there is no vent fan above the cooktop, the opening side windows provide adequate ventilation.

Private Accommodations

The accommodations deck features a three-cabin, three-head layout plus crew quarters. The helm has been repositioned approximately three feet aft to allow for a comfortable third cabin. Alternative layouts exist, such as relocating the galley below to enlarge the salon and moving the master stateroom forward, but the current configuration offers a balanced arrangement. Accessed via a curving centerline stairway with solid wood and stainless steel banisters, the master stateroom is located forward to port. It includes ample storage around and beneath the berth, natural light from a fixed port and overhead hatch, satin-finished wood finishes, an upholstered headboard, and generous headroom of six feet nine inches. The en suite features mirrored storage above dual sinks, additional storage below, teak decking extending into a glass-enclosed walk-in shower, and an overhead hatch for ventilation. The VIP stateroom is situated fully forward, offering privacy with a headroom of six feet seven inches and three feet six inches over the berth, which is accessed via nine-inch steps on both sides. It includes abundant storage, a 32-inch TV, and an en suite with a separate walk-in shower. A storage closet and a dedicated laundry room with stacked Miele washer and dryer units and a refrigerated drawer are located aft of the VIP. The day head, also with a walk-in shower, is positioned aft near the guest stateroom, which features twin berths measuring 76 by 31 inches and headroom ranging from six feet one inch to seven feet two inches. The crew quarters, accessed behind the galley via stairs, include a single berth, a wet head, a small galley with sink and refrigerator, and headroom varying from four feet one inch to five feet, providing convenient accommodation for additional guests or crew.

Conclusion

The Palm Beach 70 is a capable, go-anywhere yacht that combines exceptional craftsmanship with thoughtful design and comfortable accommodations. Its semi-custom nature allows for tailored layouts to suit individual owners’ needs, while the high level of fit and finish and attention to detail throughout the vessel underscore the brand’s reputation. The yacht is well-suited for extended cruising and entertaining, with a comfort level that complements its elegant styling and operational excellence. Further insights into its performance and handling are available in a separate review.
