More coastal cruiser than serious fishing boat, the Silverton 48 Convertible (called the 50 Convertible in 2007?08) is a good-looking flybridge yacht whose versatile layout,
spacious interior, and attractive price made her one of the bestselling boats in her class. Built on a solid fiberglass hull with a wide 16'4" beam and prop pockets, Silverton sold a lot of these boats right up until the Great Recession hit in 2007. Her three-stateroom interior includes two double staterooms including a large amidships master with walkaround bed. A comfortable salon features a solid cherry table, Bose stereo system, and an Ultraleather sofa with incliner and concealed rod storage. The galley came standard with under-counter refrigeration and hardwood flooring. Front windows?unusual in most modern convertibles?provide additional natural lighting in the forward area of the salon. A hatch in the galley sole reveals a huge storage compartment. A livewell, raw water washdown, freezer, transom door, and engine room access door are found in the cockpit. Note the molded flybridge steps. Volvo 715hp D-12 diesels cruise in the mid to high 20s (30+ top). POWERBOAT GUIDE.
Many convertible designs follow a tournament theme, the 48?s soft sweeping lines and integrated arch/hardtop combine a convertible and modern cruiser. The tournament-style wheel and tiered electronics are standard, and the bucket-style upholstered helm and companion seating offer a comfortable flair not found on other convertibles. The lounge area forward of the helm is larger than that found on most convertibles this size. The 48?s hardtop has a full, four-sided enclosure, and the entire bridge can be air-conditioned.
The 48?s strongest quality is the interior. Silverton mastered the art of bringing shoreside comforts and luxury onboard. Standard amenities include a central vacuum system and innerspring mattresses. The entertainment system in the salon includes a flat-screen TV and sound system. The solid wood, satin-finished cherry interior is accented with high-quality soft goods and European hardware and fixtures. The galley is finished with Corian countertops and hardwood flooring.
The main salon has an L-shape settee with an after built-in recliner, and an open galley and the dinette areas are forward. Curiously, a house-face windshield is standard. Belowdecks, the master cabin has a walkaround queen berth and private head. The forward cabin has a queen island berth and private access to a second head, which is also accessible from the passageway. The third cabin has upper and lower berths.
The vessel has an extremely well planned engine room, with 5'-6" headroom, easy access and space around all the machinery, and rubberized diamond plate flooring for safety, are just a few of the attributes. The engines are mounted on vinyl-coated steel I-beams, which transmit the engine load to the bulkheads instead of the stringers. The bilges are finished with gelcoat, and the underside of the saloon sole is a vacuum-bagged, balsa-cored composite with a high-gloss molded finish.
