Sea Ray 370 Sundancer: BoatTEST Review

Boat Test Review on BoatTest.com

Overview

The Sea Ray 370 Sundancer represents the largest model in Sea Ray's Sport Cruiser lineup, offering ample space to comfortably sleep six and entertain additional guests. This model combines performance with thoughtful design, making it suitable for both cruising and socializing.

Helm and Exterior Features

The helm of the 370 Sundancer is ergonomically designed with a clean layout that includes an optional Raymarine hybrid display positioned to port. Waterproof switches are mounted on a faux wood panel flanking the SmartKraft VesselView display, complemented by analog gauges above. The Axios control pad is conveniently located on the right, featuring the Skyhook position-keeping system on the test boat. Digital engine controls with tall sticks provide comfortable operation whether seated or standing. The helm seat is double-wide with dual flip-up bolsters, and multiple footrests enhance comfort. Access to the windshield walkthrough is facilitated by molded steps angled at 30 degrees, with interconnected upper and lower latches for secure closure. The foredeck features non-skid surfaces along the centerline and notably wide 13-inch side decks, a feature often omitted by other builders to maximize cockpit space. Forward on the bow, a stainless steel anchor roller holds the anchor attached to an optional concealed windlass with an all-chain rode, controlled by switches located portside near the cleat. Additional exterior options include a 5-inch remote-controlled spotlight and a side access port for anchor line management. Safety features include 24-inch high rails at the bow and a grab handle atop the sport arch to assist safe movement back to the cockpit.

Engine Compartment and Systems

An electrically actuated engine hatch provides ample access to the engine compartment, allowing room for a ladder to descend safely. The test boat was equipped with twin MerCruiser 8.2 MAG engines, each producing 375 horsepower, paired with Bravo 3 outdrives. Standard safety features include an automatic fire suppression system. To port within the compartment are the holding tank and hot water heater, while to starboard is an optional 5kW gasoline generator, with a 6kW diesel generator available as an option for diesel-powered models. The design allows for easy cockpit entry and exit even with the engine hatch open.

Performance and Handling

During testing, the 370 Sundancer demonstrated responsive and agile handling characteristics akin to smaller sport boats in Sea Ray's lineup. Upon acceleration, the bow rises approximately 12 degrees, momentarily obscuring the horizon due to the helm's forward position. The boat responds well to throttle inputs and differential controls, exhibiting a smooth 7-degree roll into turns with a lowered shoulder that improves bow visibility. The vessel has a length overall of 37 feet 6 inches, a beam of 12 feet, and a draft of 37 inches. With a test weight of 19,416 pounds (including 73% fuel and two people), the twin 375-horsepower engines propelled the boat to a top speed of 38 knots at 4,800 RPM, consuming 64.75 gallons per hour and providing a range of 120 nautical miles. The most efficient cruise speed was found to be 23.7 knots at 3,500 RPM, with a fuel burn of 27.75 gallons per hour, allowing for 7 hours and 18 minutes of cruising and a range of 174 nautical miles while maintaining a 10% fuel reserve. Acceleration metrics included planing in 5 seconds, reaching 20 miles per hour in 8.1 seconds, and 30 miles per hour in 14.2 seconds. When power is reduced, the boat settles stern-first, causing the bow to rise, which requires caution in confined areas. The 370 is also equipped with the Axius joystick control system, including the Skyhook feature for precise position holding and close-quarters maneuvering. The joystick is strategically positioned to allow effective use while facing aft during docking, providing exact and intuitive control.

Conclusion

The Sea Ray 370 Sundancer combines spacious accommodations with a well-thought-out helm and exterior design, complemented by strong performance and responsive handling. Its advanced control systems, including the Axius joystick and Skyhook, enhance maneuverability and ease of operation. Overall, the 370 Sundancer stands out as a versatile and capable sport cruiser suitable for both extended cruising and entertaining.
