Scarab 255 G: BoatTEST Review

Reviewed by Jeff Hammond

Overview

The Scarab 255 Platinum SE represents the flagship model of Scarab's jet boat lineup, measuring 25 feet in length. Powered by twin Rotax Fortech 150 horsepower engines, this vessel is designed primarily for water sports and can accommodate up to 13 passengers. It comes equipped with a tandem axle trailer, IST drive-by-wire controls, and an extensive array of standard amenities. The boat features an 8-foot, 4-inch beam, a 15-inch draft, and a dry weight of 3,660 pounds. Customizable color schemes include jet black or tan, with the test model showcasing Savannah Sand Tan vinyl upholstery accented by almond diamond stitch patterns.

Exterior Design and Deck Layout

The bow area of the Scarab 255 Platinum SE offers lounge-style seating with filler cushions that convert the space into a large sun pad. Without the filler cushion, the bow seating forms a functional U-shaped design with padded backrests, complemented by a standard side-mount table for entertaining while anchored. Storage is thoughtfully integrated beneath the forward seat in the form of an insulated, self-draining cooler compartment, with additional self-draining storage under the other two seats. The bow seating area measures 56.5 inches wide, with 53 inches of legroom in the chaise position and a 17-inch wide footwell. Additional deck storage includes a compartment measuring 33 inches long, 16 inches wide, and 8.5 inches deep. Forward access is provided via a retractable latch to a three-step boarding ladder and anchor locker.

Helm and Cockpit Features

The helm console includes a large cooler compartment on retractable sliders. Both helm and companion seats are ergonomically designed with bolsters, and the helm features a mesh storage bag on the starboard side and an elevated footrest. The cockpit deck is covered throughout with a snap-in cabana mat. The helm dashboard incorporates Scarab's custom gauge cluster, which includes a depth sounder, emergency engine shutoff, lighted switches, storage for small electronics, a 12-volt outlet, and tilt steering. Visibility is enhanced by a wraparound windshield free of mullions. Additional convenience features include a 12-volt outlet and USB audio interface on the port bulwark. The port console houses a head compartment equipped with a sink and porta-potty, with an optional pump-out system; headroom measures 47 inches with 28.5 inches of shoulder room.

Seating and Storage Versatility

The cockpit seating is highly versatile, featuring four individual seats with removable cushions that can be combined to suit the size and needs of the party aboard. Two seats behind the helm face aft, ideal for spotting during towing activities. The transom seat faces forward against the stern, and the cockpit spans 82 inches at its widest point, providing ample comfort even when fully occupied. With connective cushions in place, legroom extends up to 62 inches in a reclined position. A ski locker located in the cockpit deck measures 77 inches long and 17 inches deep. Access to the stern seating and swim platform is facilitated by a walkthrough that can be covered by a removable seat cushion. The swim platform itself is 81 inches wide with a soft non-skid surface and includes a standard retractable shower. Aft cushions can be arranged to create aft-facing seating, allowing passengers to watch swimmers off the stern. Beneath the swim platform are two large compartments suitable for storing towing gear, wet bathing suits, and water toys.

Power and Performance

The Scarab 255 Platinum SE is powered by twin Rotax 150 horsepower jet propulsion engines featuring a closed-loop cooling system, rendering the boat suitable for saltwater use. An internal shaft guard prevents weeds and ropes from entering the jet pump, eliminating the need for a clean-out port. Maneuverability is enhanced by a lateral thrust system, which facilitates docking and tight turns. Performance testing recorded a time to plane of 3.5 seconds, 0 to 20 mph in 4.6 seconds, and 0 to 30 mph in 7.4 seconds, with minimal bow rise. The top speed achieved at wide-open throttle was 40.8 mph. The most economical cruising speed was 28.3 mph at 6,000 rpm, consuming 10 gallons per hour, which allows for an endurance of approximately five hours with a 10% fuel reserve and a range of 142 statute miles. The boat demonstrated remarkable responsiveness at the helm, surpassing some conventional stern drive boats. The lateral thrust system notably improves maneuverability during docking and towing. It is important to note that when operating the jet boat in reverse, the steering wheel must be turned opposite to the direction used with conventional propeller-driven boats. The Rotax jet engines come with a three-year or 480-hour warranty.

Conclusion

Designed for a broad spectrum of water sports activities, the Scarab 255 Platinum SE combines the excitement of high-speed jet propulsion with enhanced safety for swimmers due to its jet drive system. Its thoughtful design, versatile seating, and strong performance characteristics make it a compelling choice for enthusiasts seeking both functionality and exhilaration on the water.
